Satellite Awards 2013: 12 Years a Slave continues early dominance with ten nominations

Though the Satellite Awards aren’t taken too seriously in Oscar season, they have produced some intriguing nominations as the big awards begin to emerge.

Leading the pack (a theme that is likely to continue all season) is Steve McQueen’s historical drama 12 Years a Slave which has received ten nominations including Best Motion Picture as well as acting nods for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and newcomer Lupita Nyong’o.

There is also a lot of love for the likes of Gravity and David O. Russell’s upcoming crime-flick American Hustle with eight nods each while Ron Howard’s F1 drama Rush has seven nominations (but no mention in Best Picture or Daniel Bruhl in Best Supporting Actor….).

All is Lost, Blue Jasmine, Captain Phillips, Inside Llewyn Davies, Philomena, Saving Mr Banks and The Wolf of Wall Street complete the strong lineup of films nominated in the Best Motion Picture category.

Best Director includes the likes of Woody Allen, the Coen Brothers and Martin Scorsese while the big name actors that are recognised include Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Bradley Cooper, Judi Dench, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford (42), Ryan Gosling (The Place Beyond the Pines), Tom Hanks (nodded twice for Captain Phillips and Saving Mr Banks), Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Redford, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson and Oprah Winfrey (The Butler).

The winners will be announced on March 9th 2014.
