Rancher Benedict Cumberbatch clashes with sibling Jesse Plemons in The Power of the Dog trailer

As one of Britain’s most prolific actors, Benedict Cumberbatch has already achieved a lot of success on-screen over the past twenty years.

Having portrayed memorable characters like Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock), Smaug (The Hobbit trilogy), Alan Turing (The Imitation Game), Patrick Melrose (Patrick Melrose), and Dr. Stephen Strange (Doctor Strange), the BAFTA-winning star is now heading to the ranch for his latest film; The Power of the Dog.

Directed by New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion (The Piano, Top of the Lake), the western drama’s latest trailer has landed.

Adapted from the novel by Thomas Savage, the plot centres on Phil Burbank (Cumberbatch), a ruthless ranch owner who is left aghast when his younger brother brings home a new wife and son. He then launches a campaign against the pair, only to find himself exposed to the possibility of love.

Having first collaborated together on Fargo (2015), real-life couple Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, Fargo) and Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man trilogy, Marie Antoinette) co-star as Burbank’s younger brother George and his new beau Rose.

The rest of the film’s cast includes Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit, Last Night in Soho), Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under, Joker), Adam Beach (Flags of Our Fathers, Suicide Squad) and Keith Carradine (Nashville, Madame Secretary).

Cited as a potential Oscar contender, The Power of the Dog is set to stream on Netflix from 1 December.
