Robert Pattinson steps into the role of the Caped Crusader in moody trailer for The Batman

For almost fifty years, Batman has become an icon amongst comic-book fans on both the big AND small screen.

From Adam West’s comical portrayal in the cheesy Batman series (1966-68) to Michael Keaton’s smooth turn in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) and of course, Christian Bale’s growling take in the hit Dark Knight trilogy (2005-12), the character has certainly had his ups-and-downs.

With Ben Affleck the latest star to walk away from the role, a new man has taken on the cape and cowl in the form of Robert Pattinson (Twilight Saga, Tenet) is now donning the cape and cowl for a new Batman outing simply entitled The Batman.

Following a long wait, DC fans can finally see the Scottish actor in action as the Dark Knight himself in the film’s very gritty trailer.

Directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), the plot sees Batman uncover corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while facing a serial killer known as the Riddler.

Amongst the high-profile names involved in the cast include Zoë Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road, High Fidelity) as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, Prisoners) as Edward Nashton / The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, No Time to Die) as James Gordon, Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead, The Green Lantern) as District Attorney Gil Colson, Andy Serkis (Middle Earth Saga, Black Panther) as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski, The Night Of) as Carmine Falcone and an unrecognisable Colin Farrell (In Bruges, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them) as Oswald Copplepot / The Penguin.

Additional cast members include the prolific Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk, Calm With Horses), Rupert Perry-Jones (Spooks, Black Sails) and Alex Ferns (EastEnders, Chernobyl).

On a personal note, some of its filming took place in Liverpool with specific locations including St. George’s Hall and the Liver Building featuring in the trailer.

The Batman will be released in the UK on 4 March 2022.
