Naomi Ackie portrays music icon Whitney Houston in I Wanna Dance with Somebody trailer

For Whitney Houston fans, the clock is about to strike upon the hour.

Ten years after the pop vocalist’s unfortunate death, her story has finally been giving the cinematic treatment via a new biopic.

Entitled I Wanna Dance with Somebody, the film sees BAFTA-winning British actress Naomi Ackie (The End of the F***ing World, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) step into the shoes of Houston.

Ahead of its release at Christmas, an official trailer has premiered showing Ackie in action as the renowned singer.

Directed by Kasi Lemmons (Black Nativity, Harriet) and written by Anthony McCarten (Darkest Hour, Bohemian Rhapsody), the biopic is a joyous and emotional celebration of Houston’s life and music that tracks her journey from obscurity to musical superstardom.

The celebrated yet tragic artist performed timeless hits like “I Will Always Love You” and “How Will I Know” and would go on to achieve incredible success on the awards stage including six Grammys and two Emmys.

Ackie is joined in the film by Ashton Sanders (Moonlight, Judas and the Black Messiah) as Bobby Brown, Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones, Spotlight) as Clive Davis, Nafessa Williams (Black Lightning, Black and Blue) as Robyn Crawford, Clarke Peters (The Wire, Da 5 Bloods) as John Houston and Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Flight) as Cissy Houston.

Houston is the latest artist to get her own music-based biopic following the recent successes of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), Rocketman (2019) and Elvis (2022).

I Wanna Dance with Somebody is currently scheduled to land in UK cinemas on Boxing Day.
