Mean Girls gets the musical remake treatment in official trailer for Mean Girls

Do you want to hear something ‘fetch’ Mean Girls fans? The official trailer for the musical remake is finally here…

A new adaptation of the cherished 2004 comedy from Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock) is coming to cinemas early next year after making the successful transition to Broadway in 2017.

Directed by Samantha Jayne (Less Than One, Vanity) and Arturo Perez Jr. (McCartney: Grand Central, Quarter Life Poetry), the familiar plot follows a new student at high school who becomes a hit with an A-list girl clique known as the Plastics. However, her feelings for a handsome classmate soon put her on a collision course with the group’s leader.

The new-look cast sees Angourie Rice (The Nice Guys, Mare of Easttown) take on the lead role of Cady Heron alongside musician Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Bebe Wood (The Real O’Neals, Love, Victor) as Gretchen Wieners and Avantika (Mira, Royal Dective, Boomika) as Karen Smith.

Additionally, the rest of the ensemble includes Auli’i Cravalho (Moana, The Power) as Janis Ian, newcomer Jaquel Spivey as Damian Hubbard, Christopher Birney (Daliland, The Summer I Turned Pretty) as Aaron Samuels, Busy Philipps (White Chicks, Cougar Town) as Mrs. George, Jenna Fischer (The Office (US), Blades of Glory) as Ms. Heron and Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Top Gun: Maverick) as Coach Carr.

From the original 2004 film, creator Tina Fey reprises her role as Ms. Norbury alongside Tim Meadows as Principal Duvall. However, there are no returns for other beloved 2004 cast members including Lindsay Lohan (Cady), Rachel McAdams (Regina), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen) and Amanda Seyfried (Karen).

The Mean Girls musical remake will arrive in the UK on 19 January 2024.
