Ken Loach tackles the benefit system in official trailer for Palme d’Or winning drama I, Daniel Blake

For the past fifty years, Ken Loach has become widely known for helming gritty British dramas which began with the classic Kes (1969). That was then later followed by other renowned efforts like Sweet Sixteen (2002), The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) and Looking for Eric (2009).

But the veteran director looks set to have another criticial hit with his latest drama I, Daniel Blake, a film that recently landed the Palme d’Or at last month’s Cannes Film Festival.

The official trailer has now been released online.

The story focuses on a Newcastle carpenter named Daniel Blake who suffers a heart attack and has to try and claim disablility welfare. Unfortunately, the benefits system makes life difficult for him as he then finds himself crossing paths with a struggling single mother and her two children.

Comedian actor Dave Johns tackles the powerful lead role with Hayley Squires (A Royal Night Out) also starring amongst an unknown cast.

The film looks set to strike a chord with those who have had to suffer the trauma and frustrations of the benefits system especially with its scenes depicting the job centre.

I, Daniel Blake will be released in cinemas on October 21st.
