Jennifer Hudson portrays soul legend Aretha Franklin in new trailer for Respect

As one of the greatest musicians of all time, Aretha Franklin has been cherished by many fans for her powerful work for over fifty years.

Amongst her many hit singles included “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)”, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”, “Chain of Fools”, “Think” and of course, “Respect”.

Despite her death in 2018, the legacy of the legendary Grammy-winning artist continues to live on, especially with the arrival of a new biopic that charts her remarkable life.

Fittingly entitled Respect, the film sees Oscar-winning actress and fellow Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls, Cats) step into Franklin’s shoes in a role that could bring her a second gold statue.

Following the release of a teaser preview last year, a flashy new full-length trailer showcases more of Hudson’s performance.

Directed by Liesl Tommy (The Walking Dead, Jessica Jones), the story follows Franklin’s life from singing in her father’s church choir as a child to her rise as an international music superstar.

As well as Hudson, the rest of the film’s cast includes fellow Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland, Godfather of Harlem) plus Audra McDonald (Beauty and the Beast, The Good Fight), Saycon Sengbloh (Scandal, In the Dark), Hailey Kilgore (The Village, Amazing Stories), Brenda Nicole Moorer (American Soul), Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie, White Chicks), Mac Maron (GLOW, Joker), Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Dolemite is My Name), Kimberly Scott (The Abyss, Falling Down), LeRoy McClain (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Corps) and Tate Donovan (Argo, Rocketman).

Having seen its release date postponed from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Respect will be out in UK cinemas on 10 September.
