Jake Sully and the Na’vi face an ancient threat in new trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water

Back in 2009, James Cameron left audiences dazzled by his visually-spectacular blockbuster Dances with Smurfs….I mean, Avatar!

The fantasy epic was a ginormous hit upon its release and went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time. What loyal fans didn’t expect was to wait almost a decade for a sequel to come out; the first of many that is!

Since the original film’s success, Oscar-winning director Cameron (Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Titanic) has devoted a chunk of his life working on FOUR sequels that delve deeper into the majestic world of Pandora. The first of those to arrive later this year is Avatar: The Way of Water.

After the release of a teaser in May, a new full-length trailer promises yet another big-screen spectacle.

The plot sees former human Jake Sully and Ney’tiri leave their home in order to explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake is forced to rally the Na’vi into another difficult war with the humans.

As expected, Sam Worthington (Jake) and Zoe Saldaña (Neytiri) reprise the main roles alongside Stephen Lang (Miles Quartich), Giovanni Ribsi (Parker Selfridge), Joel David Moore (Norm Spellman) and CCH Pounder (Mo’at). Despite her character’s death in the original film, Sigourney Weaver also returns as the daughter of our heroes.

Additionally, the sequel welcomes several new faces including Oscar-winner Kate Winslet (Titanic, The Reader), Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones, Taboo), Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords, Men in Black 3), Cliff Curtis (Fear the Walking Dead, Doctor Sleep), Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in the UK on 16 December.
