Industry’s Marisa Abela portrays tragic musician Amy Winehouse in new trailer for Back to Black

A new trailer has premiered for Back to Black.

The music-based biopic explores the successful yet premature life of multi-award-winning singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse, who was famed for hit singles like “Back to Black”, “Love is a Losing Game” and “Valerie”.

Brighton-born actress Marisa Abela steps into the important shoes of Amy after making headways as banking graduate Yasmin Kara-Hanani in the BBC drama series Industry.

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy, Fifty Shades of Grey) and written by Matt Greenhalgh (Nowhere Boy, Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool), the film focuses on how Amy started out life as a jazz singer before becoming a Grammy-winning music superstar. However, her success would soon fall into decline after a long battle with alcohol and drugs.

Abela is joined in the biopic by Jack O’Connell (Unbroken, SAS: Rogue Heroes), Eddie Marsan (Happy-Go-Lucky, Ray Donovan), Juliet Cowan (Cuckoo, Back to Life), Bronson Webb (RocknRolla, Ted Lasso), Ansu Kabia (Last Chrismas, Miss Scarlet and the Duke) and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris).

The film follows in the footsteps of other recent music-based biopics including Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), Rocketman (2019), I Wanna Dance With Somebody (2022) and this year’s Bob Marley: One Love.

Back to Black will arrive in UK cinemas on 12 April.
