2024 TV BAFTAs: The Crown and Happy Valley swansongs top nominations tally

A number of high-profile television dramas that came to a bittersweet conclusion last year are among the major contenders at this year’s BAFTA Television Awards.

Despite long-running controversy over its depiction of the Royal Family, the final series of Netflix’s royal drama The Crown leads the way with eight nominations with four of those going to some of its cast members.

Though Imelda Staunton was surprisingly overlooked for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II, co-stars Elizabeth Debicki and Lesley Manville both contest Best Supporting Actress for their respective turns as Princess Diana and Queen Margaret. Additionally, Dominic West is shortlisted in a tough Best Leading Actor category for his portrayal of Prince Charles while Salim Daw receives another Supporting Actor nod for his role as Mohamed Al-Fayed.

Another notable omission for The Crown came in the Best Drama Series line-up which includes the concluding series of the BBC crime thriller Happy Valley. Once again, Sarah Lancashire is nominated in Best Leading Actress for her farewell turn as Sergeant Catherine Cawood while co-stars Siobhan Finneran and Amit Shah are acknowledged for their supporting roles.

Happy Valley’s competition in the Best Drama Series category features fellow crime dramas The Gold and Top Boy and the Apple TV+ spy thriller Slow Horses.

Another concluding programme to score big at BAFTA was the HBO drama Succession with five nominations including Best International Series and a hat-trick of acting mentions.

For his farewell performance as business mogul Logan Roy, Brian Cox is up for Best Leading Actor while Matthew Macfadyen will look to score another BAFTA win in Best Supporting Actor for his final turn as Tom Wambsgans. The third acting nominee is Dame Harriet Walter who receives her FIRST nod for her small yet memorable performance as Lady Caroline Collingwood.

On the mini-series front, the Black Mirror outing Demon 79 and the factual crime drama The Sixth Commandment flourished with a combined thirteen nominations including the newly-formed Best Limited Series category. The latter also clinched three acting mentions for veteran stars Timothy Spall and Anne Reid as well as a Supporting Actor nod for Éanna Harwicke as real-life murderer Ben Field.

The Yorkshire Ripper-based drama The Long Shadow and the medical drama Best Interests round off the Best Limited Drama group while Steve Coogan receives a Best Leading Actor nomination for his controversial portrayal of disgraced entertainer Jimmy Savile in the factual drama The Reckoning.

In the comedy categories, the second series of the autobiographical Channel 4 comedy Big Boys heads the Best Scripted Comedy line-up alongside Disney’s superhero series Extraordinary and BBC sitcoms Dreaming Whilst Black and Such Brave Girls.

There are a number of high-profile stars in contention for acting BAFTAs including returning nominees Helena Bonham Carter (Nolly), Jamie Demetriou (A Whole Lifetime with Jamie Demetriou), Paapa Essiedu (The Lazarus Project), Joseph Gilgun (Brassic), Sharon Horgan (Best Interests), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Black Ops), Jasmine Jobson (Top Boy), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), and Anjana Vasan (Black Mirror: Demon 79).

After years of being overlooked, David Tennant FINALLY receives his first BAFTA nomination in Best Male in a Comedy Programme for his humorous turn as Crowley in the fantasy comedy Good Omens. Among the other first-time acting nominees include Bella Ramsey and Nico Parker (The Last of Us), Bridget Christie (The Change), Hammed Animashaun (Black Ops), Kane Robinson (Top Boy), Mawaan Rizwan (Juice), Roisin Gallagher (The Lovers), and Sofia Oxenham and Máiréad Tyers (Extraordinary).

Elsewhere, Hannah Waddingham bagged two nominations for Best Entertainment Performance and Best Entertainment Programme for her respective work as host of BBC’s coverage of Eurovision Song Contest 2023, and her Apple TV+ Christmas special Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas.

The Bear and The Last of Us are among the top US series in contention for Best International Programme while Lockerbie and Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland go head-to-head in Best Factual Series.

For the second year in a row, comedy duo Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan will host the awards which will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 12 May. Coincidentally, the pair are also shortlisted twice for Best Entertainment Performance and Best Comedy Entertainment Programme!
