After a turbulent year of change, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) have finally announced their nominations for the 79th Golden Globe Awards.
Despite the threat of a boycott and having the live ceremony dropped by NBC, the voting group unveiled their contenders for film and television with a little help from renowned rapper Snoop Dogg.
On the television side of things, HBO’s Succession takes pole position with five nominations, including a place on the Best Television Series (Drama) shortlist.
The third series of the family saga contests the main category alongside Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, FX’s Pose and Netflix duo Lupin and Squid Game.
Leading men Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong go head-to-head in a competitive Best Actor (Drama) field that includes Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game) and Billy Porter (Pose), while co-stars Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook are both acknowledged in the supporting categories.
The second series of the media-based drama The Morning Show also impressed Globe voters with a commendable four nominations, including three for its cast.
Leading lady Jennifer Aniston earns a Best Actress (Drama) nod, with MJ Rodriguez (Pose) and previous category winner Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) among her rival nominees.
Additionally, Aniston’s male co-stars Billy Crudrup and Mark Duplass are both up for Best Supporting Actor.
In the comedy fields, Apple TV’s Ted Lasso dominates proceedings with four nominations, including a Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical) spot.
Additionally, the football-based sitcom also scored a hat-trick of acting nods for Emmy-winning cast members Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein.
Ted Lasso faces stern competition from HBO Max’s Hacks, and Hulu duo The Great and Only Murders in the Building, with the latter three comedies all garnering double acting mentions.
From those programmes, Only Murders veterans Steve Martin and Martin Short compete against Nicholas Hoult (The Great) in the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) bracket, while Elle Fanning (The Great) and Hacks pair Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder go head-to-head for the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) gong.
In the miniseries fields, Hulu’s Dopesick and HBO’s Mare of Easttown are the standout contenders with both making the Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television shortlist.
The two programmes are joined in the top category by FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story, Netflix’s Maid, and Prime Video’s The Underground Railroad.
British star Kate Winslet is looking to repeat her Emmy-winning success from September after earning a Best Actress (Limited/Anthology/TV Movie) nod for Mare of Easttown, with Jessica Chastain (Scenes From a Marriage) and Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision) among her rival nominees.
Meanwhile, the Best Actor (Limited/Anthology/TV Movie) field is contested by the likes of Paul Bettany (WandaVision), Michael Keaton (Dopesick), and current Emmy holder Ewan McGregor (Halston).
The other Globe-nominated actors are Uzo Aduba (In Treatment), Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Christine Baranski (The Good Fight), Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus), Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick), Cynthia Erivo (Genius: Aretha), Oscar Isaac (Scenes from a Marriage), Andie McDowell (Maid), Margaret Qualley (Maid), Issa Rae (Insecure), Tahar Rahim (The Serpent), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish), Omar Sy (Lupin) and O Yeong-su (Squid Game).
Once again, there were a variety of notable Globe omissions, including Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building), Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), and Mare of Easttown duo Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters.
As things stand, the 79th Golden Globe Awards are set to unveil their winners at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on 9 January 2022.
