Con-artist Bradley Cooper teams up with psychiatrist Cate Blanchett in trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley

Three years after achieving Oscar success with The Shape of Water (2017), Guillermo del Toro is looking to deliver again with a bold new film.

The Mexican filmmaker (Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak) has directed a new adaptation of the psychological thriller Nightmare Alley for which he is joined by a starry ensemble cast.

Based on the gritty novel by William Lindsay Gresham, the film has premiered its new trailer online.

The film stars Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook, American Sniper) as Stanton ‘Stan’ Carlisle, an ambitious con-artist who has a talent for manipulating people. Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Aviator, Blue Jasmine) also headlines the thriller as Dr. Lilith Ritter, an experienced psychiatrist who proves to be just as dangerous as Stan as the pair trick people into giving them money.

Cooper and Blanchett are joined in the film by Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Willem Dafoe (Platoon, At Eternity’s Gate), Toni Collette (Hereditary, Knives Out), Richard Jenkins (The Visitor, The Shape of Water), Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy), Holt McCallany (Gangster Squad, Mindhunter), Clifton Collins Jr. (Traffic, Capote), Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Jim Beaver (Deadwood, Breaking Bad), Paul Anderson (Peaky Blinders, The Revenant), Lara Jean Chorostecki (Hannibal, Designated Survivor), Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard, Back to the Future Part III), and David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck, Nomadland).

Nightmare Alley is scheduled for release in the UK on 21 January.
