Golden Globe (film) nominations: Seven up for Belfast and The Power of the Dog

After a turbulent year of change, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) have finally announced their nominations for the 79th Golden Globe Awards.

Despite the threat of a boycott and having the live ceremony dropped by NBC, the voting group unveiled their contenders for film and television with a little help from renowned rapper Snoop Dogg.

Comedic-drama Belfast and western The Power of the Dog lead the cinematic nominees with seven apiece, including the coveted Best Film (Drama) award. They are joined in the prestige category by the likes of the music-based drama CODA and the sci-fi remake Dune.

Both films also received director mentions for filmmakers Kenneth Branagh and Jane Campion. On the acting front, Belfast’s Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds go head-to-head in Supporting Actor, while Caitríona Balfe is in contention for Best Supporting Actress. For Power, Benedict Cumberbatch contests a strong Best Actor (Drama) line-up, while co-stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Kirsten Dunst are shortlisted in their respective supporting categories.

Elsewhere, the sports biopic King Richard, the political satire Don’t Look Up, the indie-comedy Licorice Pizza and the musical remake West Side Story are all up for four prizes each.

King Richard’s Will Smith is a strong favourite to win Best Actor (Drama) with co-star Aunjanue Ellis nodded in Supporting Actress. Don’t Look Up and Licorice Pizza are both acknowledged in Best Film (Comedy/Musical) with actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim also receiving nods for their performances.

For West Side Story, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg is up for another Best Director award, with young starlets Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose earning mentions in Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) and Supporting Actress.

The Best Actress (Drama) category sees four actresses nominated for real-life portrayals; Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci, Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos, and Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer. The fifth slot is held by Olivia Colman for her strong turn in the drama The Lost Daughter.

Other recognisable actors to land nods include Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Peter Dinklage (Cyrano), Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick…Boom), Marion Cotillard (Annette), Emma Stone (Cruella), Ben Affleck (The Tender Bar) and Ruth Negga (Passing).

The Best Animated Film line-up sees Disney and Pixar land nods for Encanto and Luca, while Billie Eilish and Beyoncé are amongst the high-profile musicians in contention for the Best Original Song award.

However, it was a bad day for films like Bruised, C’mon, C’mon, The Last Duel, Mass, Nightmare Alley, Dear Evan Hansen, Free Guy and Titane as they all failed to get a mention.

The Golden Globes are currently set to unveil their winners on January 9th 2022.
