After a turbulent year of change, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) have finally announced their nominations for the 79th Golden Globe Awards.
Despite the threat of a boycott and having the live ceremony dropped by NBC, the voting group unveiled their contenders for film and television with a little help from renowned rapper Snoop Dogg.
On the cinematic front, the autobiographical drama Belfast and the western The Power of the Dog lead the way with seven nods apiece, including the coveted Best Motion Picture (Drama) accolade.
Both are joined in the prestige category by the likes of the music-based drama CODA, and the sci-fi remake Dune.
From Belfast, filmmaker Kenneth Branagh receives double noms for his writing and directing, while cast members Caitríona Balfe, Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds are all shortlisted in the supporting fields.
In the case of The Power of the Dog, Kiwi director Jane Campion earns a Best Director nod for her work behind the camera.
Additionally, British lead Benedict Cumberbatch contests a strong Best Actor (Drama) line-up, while co-stars Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee are shortlisted for their supporting turns.
Rounding off the Best Film (Drama) category is the sports biopic King Richard, which garnered four nods, including a Best Actor (Drama) mention for early Oscar contender Will Smith.
Smith competes in a stellar Best Actor line-up that includes former Oscar winners Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos) and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth).
Meanwhile, the Best Actress (Drama) category sees four women nominated for real-life portrayals; Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci, Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos, and Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer.
The fifth slot is taken by prolific British actress Olivia Colman for her strong turn in the drama The Lost Daughter, which also scored a Best Director nod for actor-turned-filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal.
On the lighter side of things, the political satire Don’t Look Up, the indie comedy Licorice Pizza and the musical remake West Side Story are among the high-profile films fighting it out in the Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) field.
From those flicks, Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up) and newcomer Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) lock horns in the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) line-up, while Jennifer Lawrence and musician Alana Haim are both in contention for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical).
In the case of West Side Story, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg earns another Best Director nom for his work on the newest adaptation of the celebrated 1961 film.
Additionally, rising starlet Rachel Zegler receives a Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) nod, while co-star Ariana DeBose is heavily favoured to win the Best Supporting Actress gong.
The rest of the other Globe-nominated actors are Ben Affleck (The Tender Bar), Mahershala Ali (Swan Song), Marion Cotillard (Annette), Peter Dinklage (Cyrano), Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard), Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick…Boom!), Ruth Negga (Passing), Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Emma Stone (Cruella), and deaf performer Troy Kotsur (CODA).
Elsewhere, the Best Animated Film line-up sees Disney and Pixar land nods for Encanto and Luca, while Billie Eilish and Beyoncé are among the high-profile musicians in contention for the Best Original Song award.
Finally, the newly-renamed Best Motion Picture (Non-English Language) category features the likes of Japan’s Drive My Car, Italy’s The Hand of God, and Spain’s Parallel Mothers.
However, it was a bad day for a variety of films as Bruised, C’mon, C’mon, Dear Evan Hansen, Free Guy, The Last Duel, Mass, Nightmare Alley, and Titane all failed to garner a mention.
Additionally, acting turns from Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley), Jodie Comer (The Last Duel), Bradley Cooper (Nightmare Alley), Dame Judi Dench (Belfast), Adam Driver (Annette), Jennifer Hudson (Respect), Jared Leto (House of Gucci), Marlee Matlin (CODA), Frances McDormand (The Tragedy of Macbeth), and Joaquin Phoenix (C’mon C’mon) were also overlooked.
As things stand, the 79th Golden Globe Awards are set to unveil their winners at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on 9 January 2022.
