Ginger, Rocky and their companions come up against an old foe in new trailer for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget

A new official trailer has flown in for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.

The long-awaited sequel to the hit Aardman animation from 2000 sees a number of beloved characters return, albeit with a mix of old and new voice actors.

Directed by Sam Fell (Flushed Away, ParaNorman), the plot sees chicken heroine Ginger and her whole flock living the dream at a peaceful island sanctuary that is far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, their happy ending seems complete. However, the whole of chicken-kind is soon faced with a new and terrible threat from a former adversary.

On the casting side of things, BAFTA-winning actress Thandiwe Newton (Westworld, Line of Duty) will voice Ginger at the expense of original voice actress Julia Sawalha; a move that sparked a major backlash from fans of the 2000 classic. In less surprising news, Zachary Levi (Tangled, Shazam!) replaces Mel Gibson as the voice of Rocky following Gibson’s previous misdemeanours over the years.

Additionally, rising starlet Bella Ramsey (The Worst Witch, The Last of Us) provides the vocals of Molly alongside Josie Sedgwick-Davies (Hound & the Rabbit) as Frizzle, David Bradley (Harry Potter series, Game of Thrones) as Fowler, Romesh Ranganathan (King Gary, Cinderella) as Nick, Daniel Mays (Good Omens, Code 404) as Fetcher, Nick Mohammed (Intelligence, Ted Lasso) as Dr. Fry and Peter Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy) as Reginald Smith.

However, fans of the original film can look forward to the returns of Jane Horrocks as Babs, Imelda Staunton as Bunty, Lynn Ferguson as Mac, and more shockingly, Miranda Richardson as the sinister Mrs. Tweedy.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will cluck its way onto Netflix on 15 December.
