Daisy Ridley to return as Rey in new Star Wars film

Star Wars fans, it’s official…Rey is back!

After ongoing speculation, it has been confirmed that Daisy Ridley will reprise her successful role as the heroic Jedi knight for a fourth time in a new Star Wars film.

The new outing will take place fifteen years after the events of the previous Star Wars installment The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and will focus on Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order.

The announcement was made by LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy during Star Wars Celebration in London today.

In addition to Daisy’s return, the new sequel will be written by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Peaky Blinders) and directed by two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

The Pakistani auteur is the first person of colour to helm a Star Wars film, having previously won Academy Awards for her work on Saving Face (2011) and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (2015) as well as two episodes of the Marvel series Ms. Marvel (2022).

On the news, executive producer Jon Favreau said:

“It’s just exciting. I always find it really satisfying, encouraging when you have people who come through Star Wars, come back to Star Wars. It shows you how strong that community is and how big of a bond you develop. For Daisy to come back and be part of where this is going, I’m excited to see where all at what happens there.”

Along with Obaid-Chinoy’s film, Kennedy also announced that James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) and executive producer Dave Filoni (The Mandalorian, Ahsoka) will direct other upcoming Star Wars films.
