Michael Fassbender comes to the aid of the American Samoa football team in Next Goal Wins trailer

For those of you that love your football, the official trailer for Next Goal Wins has arrived.

The factual sports dramedy from wacky filmmaker Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnorak, Jojo Rabbit) is finally making its bow this year after a number of delays stretching back to when filming began in 2019.

Based on the acclaimed 2014 documentary of the same name, the film focuses on how Dutch-American coach Thomas Rongen was tasked with changing the fortunes of the American Samoan national team after they found themselves on the wrong end of a humiliating 31-0 loss to Australia.

Through unorthodox tactics, Rongen attempted to inspire the team in their bid to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Two-time Oscar-nominee Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave, Steve Jobs) portrays Rongen with familiar support coming from Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Invisible Woman), Rhys Darby (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Kaitlyn Dever (Last Man Standing, Booksmart) and Will Arnett (Arrested Development, Bojack Horseman).

Additionally, the rest of the ensemble includes Oscar Kightley (Harry, Hunt for the Wilderpeople), David Fane (Sione’s Wedding, Our Flag Means Death), Beulah Koale (Shortland Street, Hawaii Five-0), Lehi Falepapalangi (The Islands, Sosefina), Semu Filipo (The Justice of Bunny King, Kura), Uli Latukefu (Alien: Covenant, Black Adam), Rachel House (Whale Rider, Thor: Ragnorak), Frankie Adams (Shortland Street, Mortal Engines), and newcomer Kaimana as transgender footballer Jaiyah Saelua.

Touted as the next Ted Lasso, Next Goal Wins will be released in UK cinemas from 20 October.
