Last year, BAFTA caused a furore when they nominated five male actors in the Rising Star Award category yet ignored any women. Even two of Hollywood’s most talented actresses in Jessica Chastain AND Jennifer Lawrence failed to make the cut, as the eventual winner being Hackney-born rapper-turned actor Adam Deacon.
Fortunately, they have amended themselves this year by recognising four versatile women in the category, though just the one bloke is nodded this time.
Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Silent House), Andrea Riseborough (Brighton Rock, Shadow Dancer), Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi), Juno Temple (Atonement, The Dark Knight Rises) and Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina, A Royal Affair) have all been selected by the BAFTA panel which includes Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, film critic Mark Kermode and director Kevin Macdonald.
“Being considered for this award is a huge honour. So many actors whom I admire have been recognised in this category and I’m very thankful to BAFTA and the jury for selecting me.”
“BAFTA nurtures new talent throughout the international film community so I am so very grateful to be given this fantastic opportunity.”
