Witches Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande forge an unlikely friendship in new trailer for Wicked: Part One

Wicked fans, something ‘wonderful’ is coming…

After years of speculation, a big-screen adaptation of the Wizard of Oz-based stage musical from Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz is finally coming to cinemas in the form of two parts.

After premiering its teaser preview at this year’s Super Bowl, a new full-length trailer has arrived for Wicked: Part One.

Directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), the story follows a freedom fighter who is wrongfully cast as the Wicked Witch of the West and finds herself forming an unlikely friendship with a fellow witch that brings fateful consequences.

Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Pinocchio) and Grammy Award winner Ariana Grande (Sam & Cat, Don’t Look Up) headline the film as clashing witches Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland respectively alongside a solid support cast that includes Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers), as Fiyero Tigelaar, Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park series, Independence Day) as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Ethan Slater (Fosse/Verdon, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Boq, Marissa Bode (No Roles Written) as Nessarose Thropp, Bowen Yang (Silicon Valley, Saturday Night Live) as Pfannee, Bronwyn James (Harlots, The Dig) as ShenShen, Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman, American Reject) as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh (Artemis Fowl) as Averic, Colin Michael Carmichael (Hot Fuzz, Detectorists) as Professor Nikidik, Adam James (Vigil, Mr. Bates vs. the Post Office) as Glinda’s father, and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Madame Morrible.

On top of the stage musical, the two-parter is also based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire and characters from the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and its 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film adaptation.

Wicked: Part One will fly into UK cinemas on 27 November, with Part Two arriving a year later on 26 November 2025.
