2024 SAG Awards: Oppenheimer closes in on Oscar success while The Bear sweeps TV categories

It was another unforgettable evening for major stars of film and television as they came together for the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

On the cinematic front, Oppenheimer took a giant step towards Oscar glory by clinching three key wins, including the coveted Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize. The autobiographical epic prevailed against other solid contenders including American Fiction, Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Additionally, the film also brought success for stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. as they each took home Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role and Outstanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role for their respective performances as renowned physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and government official Lewis Strauss.

Both actors are now looking certain favourites for golden statuettes after also prevailing at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

Elsewhere, Lily Gladstone revived her Oscar hopes by winning the Outstanding Female Actor in a Leading Role gong for her performance as Osage Native Mollie Burkart in the crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon.

The victory came at a crucial time for the Indigenous actress, as she overcame strong competition from fellow Best Actress frontrunner Emma Stone (Poor Things).

A less surprising result saw Da’Vine Joy Randolph consolidate her chances of Oscar success by taking home Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her lauded turn as grieving cook Mary Lamb in the dark comedy The Holdovers.

Away from acting, the action sequel Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One prevailed in the Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble category, while veteran musician and actress Barbra Streisand was the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Streisand was acknowledged for her work across sixty years that included memorable film roles like Funny Girl (1968), Hello, Dolly! (1969), What’s Up, Doc? (1972), The Way We Were (1973), Funny Lady (1975), A Star is Born (1976), Yentl (1983), Nuts (1987), The Prince of Tides (1991), The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), Meet the Fockers (2004), and The Guilt Trip (2012).

In the television categories, the second series of The Bear continued its marvellous run across awards season by adding three more wins to its trophy cabinet.

The kitchen-based ‘comedy’ overcame strong competition from the likes of Abbott Elementary and Ted Lasso to clinch Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, while central stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri were triumphant in their respective acting categories.

The Bear’s impressive haul follows up its recent victories at the Golden Globes and Emmys from earlier this year.

Elsewhere, the final series of HBO’s Succession deservedly won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series ahead of the likes of The Crown and The Last of Us.

However, the series failed to produce an acting ‘success’, as four of its cast members came short in their respective categories.

The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series group brought a surprise victory for Elizabeth Debicki as she upset Sarah Snook to win for her portrayal of Princess Diana in the final series of The Crown.

Additionally, Pedro Pascal benefited from a vote split between Succession trio Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen by taking home Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Joel in HBO’s The Last of Us.

The television-adaptation of the hit video game also clinched the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy / Drama Series.

Finally, Steven Yeun and Ali Wong rounded off their dominance throughout the small-screen awards circuit by winning the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor and Female Actor in a TV Film/Mini-Series for their roles as two strangers who get into a road rage incident in the Netflix series Beef.

The pair have now achieved the quadruple of acting victories that also included last month’s Golden Globes and Emmys.
