2023 Oscar nominations: Everything Everywhere All at Once takes centre stage with eleven nods

The Academy have finally spoken folks!

After months of ongoing tension, this year’s Oscar nominations are led by the sci-fi adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once with a dominant eleven. The film, which centres on an immigrant launderette owner’s mission to save the multiverse, contests a very strong Best Picture line-up while creative duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are both shortlisted for Best Director.

Additionally, the film also scored an impressive four nominations for its cast members with Michelle Yeoh (as multiverse heroine Evelyn Wang) up for Best Actress. Former child star Ke Huy Quan (as Evelyn’s meek husband Waymond Wang) is acknowledged in Best Supporting Actor while Jamie Lee Curtis (as cranky IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdra) and Stephanie Hsu (as Evelyn’s frustrated daughter Joy Wang) go head-to-head in Best Supporting Actress.

Elsewhere, the Irish dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin and the German war epic All Quiet on the Western Front recorded an impressive nine mentions each including the coveted Best Picture gong.

Like Everything Everywhere, Banshees also nabbed four acting nods for its chief performers with Colin Farrell (as dim farmer Pádraic Súilleabháin) competing in Best Actor. Additionally, co-stars Kerry Condon (as Pádraic’s feisty sister Siobhan Súilleabháin), Brendan Gleeson (as disillusioned villager Colin Doherty) and Barry Keoghan (as local village idiot Dominic Kearney) are all shortlisted in the supporting categories.

Having been snubbed by the Academy for his direction of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2018, filmmaker Martin McDonagh is finally nodded in the Best Director line-up.

For All Quiet, the film relied on a strong showing in the technical categories where it competes for the likes of Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score. As expected, it is also up for Best International Feature alongside Argentina’s Golden Globe-winning biopic Argentina, 1985 and the Irish drama The Quiet Girl.

Meanwhile, there was a strong showing from the music-based biopic Elvis as it landed seven nominations including Best Picture and a first Best Actor nod for Austin Butler (as music icon Elvis Presley).

His competition in a respective Best Actor category includes Brendan Fraser (as morbidly-obese teacher Charlie) in The Whale, Irish actor Paul Mescal (as troubled father Calum Paterson) in Aftersun, and veteran British performer Bill Nighy (as dying civil servant Rodney Williams) in Living.

Despite a woeful performance at BAFTA last week, Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical drama The Fabelmans snared six Oscar mentions including Best Picture as well as another Best Director nod for the legendary filmmaker. Additionally, his long-time collaborator John Williams receives his 53RD nomination for his composing on the film.

The rest of the lucrative Best Picture line-up sees blockbuster sequels Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick shortlisted alongside the psychological drama Tár, the satirical comedy Triangle of Sadness and the female-led ensemble drama Women Talking.

On the subject of Tár, leading star Cate Blanchett (as disgraced orchestra conductor Lydia Tár) contests an impressive Best Actress line-up that also includes Michelle Williams (as encouraging mother Mitzi Schildkraut-Fabelman) in The Fabelmans and Ana de Armas (as tragic Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe) in the controversial biopic Blonde.

The fifth slot was surprisingly taken by British actress Andrea Riseborough as she landed her first Oscar nomination for her performance as former lottery winner Leslie Rowlands in the indie drama To Leslie. The Newcastle-born star sneaked into the category after receiving a growing surge of support on social media from fellow actresses including Jennifer Aniston, Jane Fonda, Amy Adams, Kate Winslet and Jodie Comer.

Meanwhile, recent Golden Globe winner Angela Bassett becomes the first actor to receive an Oscar nomination for a Marvel film after scoring a nod in Best Supporting Actress for her reprised role as Wakandan Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She competes against Condon and the Everything Everywhere women as well as Hong Chau (as concerned nurse Liz) in The Whale.

Elsewhere, veteran actor Judd Hirsch becomes the second oldest acting nominee in Oscar history after being acknowledged for his brief turn as supportive grandfather Boris Schildkraut in The Fabelmans; 42 years after his previous nod for Ordinary People (1980)! He is joined in the Best Supporting Actor category by surprise nominee Brian Tyree Henry (as troubled garage owner James Aucoin) for the indie-drama Causeway.

This year’s acting contenders were particularly impressive given that SIXTEEN out of the twenty performers were first-time nominees including Farrell, Nighy, Yeoh, Gleeson, Curtis.

In other categories, Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio contests a strong Best Animated Film alongside Pixar’s Turning Red and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish while other high-profile films to score nods include Babylon, The Batman, Empire of Light, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.

Finally, the Best Original Song category sees the energetic tune ‘Naatu Naatu’ from the Tollywood epic RRR face stern competition from celebrated musicians Lady Gaga and Rhianna with their own ballads from Top Gun: Maverick and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever respectively.

As to be expected, there were a number of key snubs for both films and actors.

Despite garnering key nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG awards AND BAFTAs, Viola Davis and Eddie Redmayne were both overlooked for their respective roles in The Woman King and The Good Nurse. Danielle Deadwyler was also ignored by the Academy despite delivering a powerhouse performance in the factual drama Till.

Additionally, high-profile films like Amsterdam, Decision to Leave, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Emancipation, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, The Menu, Nope, The Northman, She Said and Thirteen Lives were also completely overlooked by the Academy.

The 95th Academy Awards will once again be held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday 12 March with chat show host Jimmy Kimmel presenting for the third time.
