2023 BAFTA (film) nominations: All Quiet on the Western Front leads with fourteen nods

With less than a week to go until the Oscar nominations are announced, BAFTA have unveiled their illustrious line-up of contenders as awards season hots up.

The surprise leader of the pack is Netflix’s powerful adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, with a supreme fourteen nods.

The war epic, which follows a group of young German soldiers experiencing the horrors of fighting in the First World War, contests a strong Best Film line-up, while filmmaker Edward Berger is shortlisted in the Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay categories.

Additionally, cast member Albrect Schuch is acknowledged in Best Supporting Actor, while the rest of the nominations are for technical achievements.

It is the strongest showing for a film at BAFTA since The King’s Speech back in 2011.

Elsewhere, Oscar frontrunners The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once continued their awards’ dominance with ten nominations each.

Both flicks are in contention for Best Film, with Banshees also acknowledged in the Outstanding British Film category. Once again, leading man Colin Farrell is nodded in Best Actor while co-stars Kerry Condon, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan contest the supporting categories.

For Everything, the sci-fi adventure’s filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are both mentioned in Best Director while stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis are nodded in Best Leading Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively.

Elsewhere, the music-based biopic Elvis performed well with a hefty nine nominations including Best Film while star man Austin Butler competes in a versatile Best Leading Actor category that also includes Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Bill Nighy (Living).

The final contender shortlisted for Best Film is the music-based drama Tár which scored an additional four nods including Best Leading Actress for central star Cate Blanchett. Her competition in that line-up includes Ana de Armas (Blonde), Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till).

In the Outstanding British Film category, the indie drama Aftersun and the romantic comedy Good Luck to You, Leo Grande are in contention alongside other recognisable features including Empire of Light, Living and Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical.

Other high-profile names to score acting nominations are Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), Carey Mulligan (She Said), Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse), Micheal Ward (Empire of Light) and recent Golden Globe winner Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever).

One actor that performed well was Irish star Daryl McCormack, as he scored a mention in Best Leading Actor for his role as a handsome male escort in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.

Additionally, McCormack also contests an impressive EE Rising Star award line-up that includes Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, I Wanna Dance with Somebody), Sheila Atim (The Underground Railroad, The Woman King), Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Emily), and Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education, Living).

Elsewhere, blockbusters like Avatar: The Way of Water, The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick are in contention for a number of technical awards while the Best Animated Film category sees Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio compete against the likes of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Turning Red.

However, there were a number of key snubs, led by a shocking underperformance from recent Globe-winning film The Fabelmans in which it scored just one nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Additionally, notable acting omissions included Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans), Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick), and Brad Pitt (Babylon).

This year’s ceremony will be hosted by seasoned British actor Richard E. Grant (Withnail & I, Can You Ever Forgive Me?) with the event taking place at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on 19 February.
