As things stand, The Power of the Dog is galloping its way towards Oscar glory after scoring two key wins at last night’s BAFTA film awards.
The moody western drama landed the coveted Best Film prize, while an absent Jane Campion eased her way to another Best Director win for her work behind the camera.
However, the biggest winner on the night was the sci-fi blockbuster Dune as it scooped five prizes for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score for musician Hans Zimmer.
Elsewhere, an absent Will Smith took a giant stride towards a maiden gold statue by landing Best Actor for his portrayal of tennis coach Richard Williams in the sports biopic King Richard.
Both supporting races are also looking game set match after deaf actor Troy Kotsur and Broadway star Ariana DeBose took home Supporting Actor and Actress respectively for their roles in CODA and West Side Story. CODA also prevailed in the Best Adapted Screenplay category, while West Side also picked up the Best Casting prize.
In a bizarre predicament, none of this year’s Oscar contenders for Best Actress were nominated by BAFTA. As a result, this enabled British performer Joanna Scanlan to win her category for her powerful performance as a widowed Muslim in the indie-drama After Love.
Elsewhere, the Irish drama Belfast won the Outstanding British Film category, while Pixar’s Encanto was named Best Animated Film.
On a night dedicated to the 60th anniversary of James Bond, the action blockbuster No Time to Die won Best Editing while actress Lashana Lynch was the winner of this year’s EE Rising Star Award.
Other films to triumph on the night included Licorice Pizza (Best Original Screenplay), Cruella (Best Costume Design), The Eyes of Tammy Faye (Best Makeup & Hairstyling), Summer of Soul (Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (Best Documentary) and The Harder They Fall (Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer).
However, a number of films with multiple nominations went home empty-handed including Don’t Look Up, House of Gucci, Boiling Point, Cyrano, The French Dispatch, The Lost Daughter and Passing.
The ceremony welcome a full capacity audience for the first time in two years, with Australian comedian actress Rebel Wilson earning mixed reviews for her presenting gig.
