For many computer game fans, Sonic the Hedgehog has earned his rightful place as one of the most beloved characters of that particular format.
The speedy and blue-coloured animal has enjoyed great success in a wide variety of hit games (especially on the SEGA-Mega Drive) as well as numerous television spin-offs.
However the official trailer for his live-action debut is likely to force many of his beloved fans to run away at a brisk pace….
Directed by newcomer Jeff Fowler, the plot sees Sonic being pursued by the U.S. government after he finds himself transported into the real world. He ends up gaining help from a local cop but also has to deal with the threat of his mortal enemy Dr. Ivo Robotnik.
Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation, Bojack Horseman) provides the voice of our blue hero with comedy legend Jim Carrey (Dumb and Dumber, Liar Liar) playing a very-thin looking Robotnik.
The rest of the support cast includes James Marsden (X-Men series, Enchanted), Tika Sumpter (Get On Up, Ride Along), Adam Pally (Dirty Grandpa, The Mindy Project) and Neal McDonough (Justified, Arrow).
The action-adventure will be looking to avoid following in the footsteps of previous computer-games that became flop films including Super Mario Bros (1993), Doom (2005) and Max Payne (2008).
Sonic the Hedgehog will be released in the UK on Boxing Day.
