When it comes to films, it’s been a rather difficult time for the talented Johnny Depp.
The Oscar-nominated star of Sleepy Hollow and the Pirates of the Caribbean series has endured a poor run of form in recent years.
From The Tourist (2010) and The Rum Diary (2012) to Transcendence (2014) and this year’s comedy flop Mortdecai, the chameleon actor has been looking for a big performance to revive his floundering film career.
Hope could yet come from his new role as real-life gangster boss James “Whitey” Bulger in the upcoming crime drama Black Mass. The film premiered a gripping trailer earlier today.
Directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace), the film charts the notourious Irish-Boston mobster’s rise as one of the most violent criminals in American history. Facing the threat of a rival Mafia family, he would end up becoming an FBI informant in a period stretching between the 1970s and 90s.
Depp leads an all-star cast which also includes British star Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, The Imitation Game), Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Exodus: Gods and Kings), Kevin Bacon (Footloose, The Following), Jesse Plemons (Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad), Sienna Miller (Factory Girl, American Sniper), Peter Sarsgaard (An Education, Green Lantern), Corey Stoll (Midnight in Paris, House of Cards), Juno Temple (Atonement, Killer Joe) and Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson.
Black Mass will be released in cinemas in September.
