2016 has already been a major success for Alicia Vikander after she clinched the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in The Danish Girl back in February.
With upcoming roles in Jason Bourne and Tulip Fever due later this year, the Swedish star of The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015) and Ex Machina (2015) has now landed the part of action heroine Lara Croft in a new big-screen outing of the computer game adventure Tomb Raider.
Vikander beat off competition from Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress Daisy Ridley to take the role which will focus on the origins of Croft before she became the renowned explorer we know today.
She will be following in the footsteps of fellow Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie who played the iconic character in two films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)
Norwegian director Roar Uthaug (Cold Prey, The Wave) will helm the project with production due to start next year. A release date has yet to be confirmed.
