The nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled with multiple HBO Max programmes taking centre stage.

In the dramatic fields, the lauded medical drama The Pitt is looking to dominate again after picking up a mammoth 25 nods across the major and technical fields for its second series.

The programme, which follows the healthcare workers of an overburdened Pittsburgh hospital, is looking to repeat its victory in the lucrative Outstanding Drama Series category after winning there last year.

Once again, central star and co-creator Noah Wyle earns a Lead Actor nod for his acclaimed role as seasoned physician Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, and is also in contention for the directing accolade.

Additionally, Katherine LaNasa is bidding to win her second successive Supporting Actress award for her reprised role as no-nonsense nurse Dana Evans, but faces competition from first-time nominated co-stars Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif and Sepideh Moafi.

Furthermore, male cast members Patrick Ball, Shawn Hatosy and Gerran Howell are all shortlisted in the Supporting Actor category, while Tal Anderson, Jeff Kober and Ernest Harden Jr. are among the guest stars in contention for their own acting honours.

The Pitt is joined in the Outstanding Drama Series line-up by fellow HBO Max dramas The Gilded Age, and the Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with the latter performing well in the technical categories.

Apple TV also enjoyed a strong showing on the main shortlist with the sci-fi drama Pluribus garnering an impressive eighteen nominations including a first Lead Actress nod for Rhea Seehorn, and supporting mentions for co-stars Karolina Wydra and Carlos-Manuel Vesga.

The latest series of the hit Apple spy thriller Slow Horses also makes the shortlist, and is surprisingly joined by the second series of the crime dramedy Your Friends & Neighbors, as well as Netflix’s The Diplomat and Hulu’s Paradise.

Meanwhile, two-time Emmy winner Zendaya earns a Lead Actress nod for her swansong turn as drug addict Rue Bennett in the final series of HBO Max’s Euphoria, while the rest of the notable acting nomines include Chase Infiniti (The Testaments), Keri Russell (The Diplomat), Sterling K. Brown (Paradise), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Mark Ruffalo (Task), Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat), Allison Janney (The Diplomat), Julianne Nicholson (Paradise), Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) and Tom Pelphrey (Task).

On the humour front, HBO Max continued to garner momentum as the final series of Hacks broke the record for the most nominations in a single year for a comedy series with 24 – a record previously held by The Studio last year.

As expected, the dark comedy competes in a tough Outstanding Comedy Series category that is contested by Apple TV trio Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Shrinking and Widow’s Bay, as well as ABC’s Abbott Elementary, FX/Hulu’s The Bear, Netflix’s Nobody Wants This and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.

Once again, celebrated star Jean Smart is bidding to win her FIFTH Lead Actress gong for her swansong turn as veteran comedian Deborah Vance, while co-stars Hannah Einbinder, Megan Stalter and showrunner Paul W. Downs are all in contention for the supporting honours.

From the Apple TV line-up, the supernatural comedy Widow’s Bay produced a strong showing with nineteen nominations including a Lead Actor mention for Welsh performer Matthew Rhys as long-suffering New England mayor Tom Loftis, and a Supporting Actress nod for Bury-born star Kate O’Flynn.

Elsewhere, Hollywood legend Harrison Ford earns another Supporting Actor nomination for Shrinking, while Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer are recognised in the lead and supporting actress categories for their roles in the biographical dark comedy Margo’s Got Money Troubles.

Meanwhile, Lisa Kudrow receives a Lead Actress nod for her farewell turn as sitcom actress Valerie Cherish in the final series of HBO Max’s The Comeback while the other notable acting nominees include Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Wonder Man), Steve Carell (Rooster), Jason Segel (Shrinking), Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building), Janelle James (Abbott Elementary), Jessica Williams (Shrinking), Colman Domingo (The Four Seasons), Nick Offerman (Margot’s Got Money Troubles), Stephen Root (Widow’s Bay) and Tyler James Williams (Abbott Elementary).

Finally, Netflix’s Beef and HBO Max’s DTF St. Louis are among the major dramas in contention for the limited series accolades after scoring a combined 29 nominations.

Both programmes are up for the coveted Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series award and find themselves in competition with Peacock’s All Her Fault, Netflix’s The Beast in Me, and FX/Hulu’s Love Story.

After previous success at the Emmys in 2024, the anthology drama Beef returns to the fold with a new slate of acting nominees that include lead mentions for Oscar Isaac and British star Carey Mulligan.

In the case of the comic drama DTF St. Louis, four cast members are in contention for the acting awards with Jason Bateman, David Harbour and Richard Jenkins all shortlisted in the Supporting Actor field.

Remarkably, Bateman is also up for a further three individual nominations for producing the series, as well as acting and directing nods for the Netflix thriller Black Rabbit.

On the subject of repeat nominees, comedy contenders Matthew Rhys and Nick Offerman are recognised in the limited fields for their respective performances in The Beast in Me and Death by Lightning.

Meanwhile, rising star Sarah Pidgeon earns her first Emmy nod for her portrayal of Carolyn Bessette in Love Story, while Irish performer Charlie Hunnam contests the Lead Actor category for his creepy turn as serial killer Ed Gein in the Netflix miniseries Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
