The nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled amid uncertainty about whether the ceremony will go ahead as planned.
It has been speculated that ongoing strike action in Hollywood could see this year’s event pushed back towards the end of 2023 or even the start of 2024.
In the meantime, HBO’s Succession is the leader of the pack in this year’s Emmy nods, with a formidable 27 that include nine for its dominant ensemble cast.
The final series of the family saga contests the prestigious Outstanding Drama Series accolade where it faces mighty competition from the likes of the final series of Better Call Saul, The Crown and fellow HBO contenders House of the Dragon, The Last of Us and The White Lotus.
For the first time in Emmys history, three cast members are nominated in the Lead Actor category with Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong all shortlisted for their respective roles as family relatives Logan, Roman and Kendall Roy.
After contesting the Supporting Actress field beforehand, Sarah Snook participates in the Lead Actress line-up for her performance as Shiv Roy, while co-star J. Smith-Cameron (Gerri Kellman) is the sole representative in Snook’s former category.
Finally, last year’s Supporting Actor victor Matthew Macfadyen (Tom Wambsgans) will look to defend his crown against fellow cast members Nicholas Braun (Greg Hirsch), Alan Ruck (Connor Roy) and Alexander Skarsgård (Lukas Matsson).
Fellow HBO giants The Last of Us and The White Lotus also flourished with this year’s Emmy nominations after scoring over twenty mentions apiece.
As the first live-action video game adaptation to receive major Emmy nods, The Last of Us also receives acting mentions for leading stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
After dominating the limited series field last year, The White Lotus now competes as a drama after releasing its second series earlier in 2023. The mystery satire now has the luxury of garnering a wealthy nine acting nominations for its starry cast, including one for the current Supporting Actress (Limited or Anthology Series) holder Jennifer Coolidge.
Additionally, the likes of F. Murray Abraham, Aubrey Plaza and British duo Theo James and Will Sharpe are among the other Lotus stars in contention for the supporting gongs.
The third HBO series in contention for recognition is the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon with eight nods though non of its cast members are among the acting nominees. Fellow cult series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power fared little better with just six technical nods.
Elsewhere, the final series of AMC’s Better Call Saul is up several accolades with main man Bob Odenkirk looking to bag an overdue victory for his farewell role as corrupted lawyer Jimmy McGill. As it stands, the Breaking Bad spin-off has an unwarranted record of being winless from all of its Emmy nominations since 2015.
Meanwhile, the Star Wars franchise has three programmes in contention for awards with the Rogue One prequel Andor shortlisted in Outstanding Drama Series while The Mandalorian is included in several technical categories.
After achieving BAFTA success earlier this year, Apple TV’s Bad Sisters scored double mentions for Irish star Sharon Horgan who is nominated for both her writing and her leading performance.
The rest of the notable acting nominees include Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Keri Russell (The Diplomat), Jeff Bridges (The Old Man), Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul), and Michael Imperioli (The White Lotus).
In terms of key omissions, Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), Imelda Staunton (The Crown), Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon), Dominic West (The Crown), Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets) and John Lithgow (The Old Man) were among the drama contenders ignored by the television academy.

Elsewhere, the final series of Apple TV’s Ted Lasso leads the way in the comedy fields with a hefty 22 nominations including the Outstanding Comedy Series prize.
The football-based sitcom faces off against the swansong series of HBO’s Barry and Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well as returning comedies Abbott Elementary (ABC) and Only Murders in the Building (Hulu) and new contenders The Bear (FX), Jury Duty (Amazon Freevee) and Wednesday (Netflix).
Once again, Lasso’s leading man Jason Sudeikis will be looking to score a hat-trick of wins in Lead Actor for his farewell role as folksy football coach Ted Lasso while co-stars Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), Juno Temple (Keeley Jones) and Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton) are in contention for the supporting accolades.
However, the early frontrunner for the top prizes is FX’s The Bear which has already dominated other key awards groups including the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild. As well as contesting Outstanding Comedy Series, the kitchen-based dark comedy also receives three acting nods for its stars with Jeremy Allen White a strong favourite to win the Lead Actor gong while co-stars Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are acknowledged in the supporting categories.
Elsewhere, Amazon Freevee receives its first nomination in the Outstanding Comedy Series category for its reality hoax sitcom Jury Duty with James Marsden acknowledged for his real-life guest role in the Supporting Actor field.
Additionally, Tim Burton’s Addams Family-based series Wednesday also made a strong impression with the television academy by bagging twelve nods including a Lead Actress mention for rising starlet Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams.
Meanwhile, the second series of ABC’s Abbott Elementary is up for several awards including another Lead Actress mention for creator Quinta Brunson as well as acting nods for co-stars Tyler James Williams, Janelle James and last year’s Supporting Actress victor Sheryl Lee Ralph.
On a bittersweet note, the final series of HBO’s Barry and Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are looking for farewell recognition for their cast members including previous comedy acting winners Rachel Brosnahan, Bill Hader and Henry Winkler.
The rest of the notable acting nominees include Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Natasha Lyonne (Poker Face), Jason Segel (Shrinking), Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building), Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Jessica Williams (Shrinking).
In terms of surprising snubs, Harrison Ford was shockingly overlooked for his role in Apple TV’s Shrinking while the likes of Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building), Lisa Ann Walter (Abbott Elementary), Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso), and Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) also failed to make the Emmy cut.

Finally, Netflix duo Beef and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story have the early advantage in the limited series line-ups with thirteen nominations each.
The pair compete in the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category alongside Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & the Six, FX’s Fleishman Is in Trouble and the Star Wars spinoff series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Beef, which centres on a road rage incident that escalates into a prolonged feud, will be looking to continue its dominant run throughout awards season after key successes at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Once again, central stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong are both in contention for the lead acting gongs while co-stars Maria Bello, Joseph Lee and Young Mazino are acknowledged for their supporting turns.
Despite its controversial subject matter, Dahmer is up for multiple key prizes including a Lead Actor nod for Evan Peters and his portrayal of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer as well as supporting noms for co-stars Niecy Nash-Betts as Glenda Cleveland and Richard Jenkins as Lionel Dahmer.
Meanwhile, British duo Taron Egerton (Black Bird) and Daniel Radcliffe (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story) are nominated in Lead Actor for their respective roles as real-life figures Jimmy Keene and Al Yankovic while Jessica Chastain (George & Tammy) and Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & the Six) are among the prolific female stars battling it out in Lead Actress.
Elsewhere, the late Ray Liotta receives a posthumous Supporting Actor nomination for his role in the crime drama Black Bird alongside co-star and category favourite Paul Walter Hauser as real-life killer Larry Hall while Welcome to Chippendales duo Annaleigh Ashford and Juliette Lewis go head-to-head in Supporting Actress.
The rest of the notable acting nominees include Lizzy Caplan (Fleishman Is in Trouble), Dominique Fishback (Swarm), Kathryn Hahn (Tiny Beautiful Things), Kumail Nanjani (Welcome to Chippendales), Michael Shannon (George & Tammy), Claire Danes (Fleishman Is in Trouble), Merritt Wever (Tiny Beautiful Things), Murray Bartlett (Welcome to Chippendales) and Jesse Plemons (Love & Death).
