It’s official, Shrek, Donkey and Fiona are heading on another whirlwind adventure!
After years of speculation, it has finally been confirmed that Shrek 5 is in the works with the franchise’s core voice cast of Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) all set to return.
Additionally, the DreamWorks Animation sequel will be co-directed by both Walt Dohrn, who worked as a writer on the second and third films of the series, and Brad Ableson who recently helmed Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022).
The beloved animated franchise began life under Jeffrey Katzenberg’s tutelage with the 2001 film that was praised for its animation style and for playing with fairy-tale tropes. It grossed almost $500 million at the worldwide box-office and went on to become the first recipient of the Best Animated Feature Oscar.
The film’s first sequel Shrek 2 (2004) also delivered with critics and audiences and became the franchise’s highest-grossing installment and was then followed by diverse follow-ups Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010).
As things stand, Shrek 5 is slated to arrive in cinemas worldwide on 1 July 2026, which will fittingly mark the 25th anniversary of when the first film was released.
