Vice, A Star is Born and Green Book dominate 2019 Golden Globe film nominations:

With Christmas almost here, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have given us film fanatics an early present with their nominations for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards.

Leading the way with six nods is the political biopic Vice which stars Christian Bale as the controversial former vice-president Dick Cheney. The film is up for Best Film (Comedy/Musical) with Bale nominated for his portrayal. Co-stars Sam Rockwell and Amy Adams are acknowledged in the supporting categories while Adam McKay is recognised for his directing and writing.

There are five mentions apiece for the light-hearted biopic Green Book and the historical comedy The Favourite, both of whom are competing in Best Film (Comedy/Musical) with Vice. The former earned acting nods for Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali while Peter Farrelly gained double mentions for his writing and directing. The Favourite earned three acting nods for female stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz while the film also showed up in Best Screenplay.

The rest of the Comedy/Musical film lineup is completed by the upcoming Disney sequel Mary Poppins Returns, which has four mentions including acting recognition for Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the hit rom-com Crazy Rich Asians which also landed a Best Actress nod for Constance Wu.

It was also a very good day for Bradley Cooper as he landed double nominations for his directing and lead role in the musical drama A Star is Born. Co-star Lady Gaga is competing for Best Actress (Drama) while the film’s hit song “Shallow” is a strong favourite to win the Best Original Song category.

Despite being deemed a critical disappointment upon its release, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody scored two key nominations for Best Film (Drama) and for leading man Rami Malek who earned strong praise for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury.

The rest of the Best Film (Drama) category is contested by the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther, the Spike Lee-directed biopic Blackkklansman (with four nods including Best Actor and Supporting Actor) and the indie-drama If Beale Street Could Talk (four nods including Best Director and Best Supporting Actress).

Elsewhere, the Mexican drama Roma scored three mentions including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron while the animated film line-up features solid contenders including Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Other big name stars to land key acting nominations included Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Glenn Close (The Wife), Nicole Kidman (Destroyer), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Rosamund Pike (A Private War), Robert Redford (The Old Man and the Gun), John C. Reilly (Stan & Ollie), Charlize Theron (Tully), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Claire Foy (First Man).

There were also several notable snubs with Ryan Gosling (First Man), Ethan Hawke (First Reformed), Viola Davis (Widows) and Sam Elliott (A Star is Born) amongst the major names overlooked.

The ceremony will be hosted by actors Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy, Killing Eve) with the 76th Golden Globes award ceremony taking place on January 6th.
