The most celebrated programmes and performances of 2018 have been recognised following today’s Golden Globe Award nominations.
After achieving Emmy success back in September, FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story leads the way with four nods.
The anthology series, which depicts the killing of renowned fashion designer Gianni Versace, is on the shortlist for Best Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
Additionally, Darren Criss will look to follow up his recent Emmy victory after earning a Best Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie) nom for his portrayal of serial killer Andrew Cunanan, while co-stars Édgar Ramírez and Penélope Cruz are up for the supporting gongs.
HBO’s Sharp Objects and BBC’s A Very English Scandal also fared well in the miniseries fields, with three nods each, including Best Limited Series/TV Movie, which is filled by TNT’s The Alienist and Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora.
From Sharp Objects, Hollywood favourite Amy Adams is in contention for Best Actress (Limited Series/TV Movie) while co-star Patricia Clarkson earns a Best Supporting Actress nod.
Meanwhile, British performer Hugh Grant contests Best Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie) for his portrayal of disgraced politician Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal, with co-star Ben Whishaw acknowledged for his supporting turn as Norman Scott.
Fellow British star Benedict Cumberbatch also receives a Best Actor nod for his lauded performance in the Sky Original drama Patrick Melrose.
Elsewhere, FX gained further plaudits for The Americans, as the final series of the spy drama grabbed three nominations, including Best Television Series (Drama).
Additionally, Welsh performer Matthew Rhys is looking to score another Best Actor accolade after his Emmy victory in September, while co-star and real-life partner Keri Russell contests the Best Actress (Drama) category.
The Americans is joined in a competitive Best Television Series (Drama) field that consists of four new contenders in the form of BBC hits Bodyguard and Killing Eve, Prime Video’s Homecoming, and fellow FX programme Pose.
From those programmes, Sandra Oh earns a Best Actress (Drama) nom for Killing Eve to coincide with co-hosting the upcoming Globes ceremony with Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg in January.
The rest of the Best Actress (Drama) line-up is contested by the likes of former category winner Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Hollywood heavyweight Julia Roberts (Homecoming).
Meanwhile, Scottish star Richard Madden receives a Best Actor (Drama) nod for his role in Bodyguard, with stern competition coming from Jason Bateman (Ozark) and Billy Porter (Pose).
On the funny side of things, Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel continued its impressive haul of awards recognition with three nominations, including Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical).
Additionally, recent Emmy-winning stars Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein are looking to score further success in the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) and Best Supporting Actress categories for their performances in the period comedy.
Netflix’s The Kominsky Method also enjoyed a good day with three nods, including a place on the Best Television Series (Comedy/Musical) shortlist, alongside HBO’s Barry, NBC’s The Good Place and Showtime’s Kidding.
Kominsky veterans Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin are also in contention for acting gongs, with the former competing in a versatile Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) category with Jim Carrey (Kidding), Sacha Baron Cohen (Who is America?), Donald Glover (Atlanta) and current Emmy holder Bill Hader (Barry).
After landing the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) gong way back in 1988, Candice Bergen earns a comeback nomination for her Globe-winning role as investigative journalist Murphy Brown in the revival of CBS’s Murphy Brown.
Her fellow nominees in the category include Kristen Bell (The Good Place), Alison Brie (GLOW) and Debra Messing (Will & Grace).
Recent Emmy winners Regina King (Seven Seconds), Thandie Newton (Westworld) and Henry Winkler (Barry) also receive acting nominations alongside Caitríona Balfe (Outlander), Antonio Banderas (Genius: Picasso), Connie Britton (Dirty John), Daniel Brühl (The Alienist), Kieran Culkin (Succession), Laura Dern (The Tale), Stephen James (Homecoming), and Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale).
As expected, there were a number of key snubs with renowned programmes like Better Call Saul, Black-ish, Modern Family, Ozark, and This is Us being completely overlooked.
Additionally, the notable acting omissions included Sterling K. Brown (This is Us), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Ted Danson (The Good Place), Benicio del Toro (Escape at Dannemora), John Krasinski (Jack Ryan), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), and Emma Stone (Maniac).
The 76th Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Sunday 6 January 2019.
