Almost fifty years since Julie Andrews enchanted us with her iconic role as Mary Poppins (1964) in the cherished musical of the same name, Disney have decided to mark the film’s nearby anniversary with a biopic charting its creation entitled Saving Mr Banks.
Oscar-winning actors Emma Thompson (Howard’s End, Sense and Sensibility) and Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan) portray Poppins author PL Travers and Disney creator Walt Disney respectively in the upcoming biopic which has premiered its official trailer.
Directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), the film focuses on Travers’s disapproval of her novel being turned into a family musical which results in her clashing with Walt Disney himself. However it emerges that her anger stems from a troubled childhood which allowed her to make Poppins much stricter in the book compared to the much-loved on-screen portrayal.
Colin Farrell (In Bruges, Total Recall), Paul Giamatti (Sideways, Cinderella Man), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing, The Cabin in the Woods), BJ Novak (Inglorious Basterds, The Office) and Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr Fox) also star in the light-hearted drama.
The film is set for release near Christmas on December 20th.
