2013 TV BAFTA nominations: The Girl, Twenty Twelve and Olympics Coverage among standout contenders

The nominations for the 59th BAFTA Television Awards have been unveiled.

On the drama front, the BBC television film The Girl holds its own with eight nods, including four in the major categories.

The factual drama, which explores the tense relationship between legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and leading lady Tippi Hedren, picked up three acting mentions for central stars Sienna Miller (as Hedren), Toby Jones (as Hitchcock) and Imelda Staunton (as Hitchcock’s wife Alma Reville).

There are also multiple nominations for the BBC period drama Parade’s End and the second series of the BBC anthology drama Accused, with six apiece, including Best Miniseries.

From the former, Rebecca Hall receives a Leading Actress nomination, though co-star Benedict Cumberbatch is overlooked in his own field.

For Accused, the Jimmy McGovern-produced miniseries earned three acting noms for its cast with Sean Bean acknowledged in Leading Actor for his role as a transvestite while co-star Stephen Graham is in contention for the Supporting Actor prize.

The third Accused cast member to receive a mention is Olivia Colman, as she competes in the Supporting Actress category. Coincidentally, the Norwich-born star is also in contention to win the Female Comedy Performance award for her role in the satire Twenty Twelve.

The BBC Two series, which pokes fun at the organisers of the Olympics Games, is shortlisted for the Situation Comedy prize, while Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes join Colman as two of the comedy nominees.

On the subject of the London Olympics, the 2012 ceremony is highlighted for a few awards, including two in the Sport & Live Event category as well as the Radio Times Audience Award. Its competition in that particular line-up includes HBO’s Game of Thrones and BBC trio Call the Midwife, The Great British Bake Off and Strictly Come Dancing.

Meanwhile, there are also double acting nominations for Peter Capaldi for both his comedy and dramatic work.

The Scottish star receives a Supporting Actor nod for his role as news producer Randall Brown in the BBC One drama The Hour, as well as another Male Comedy Performance mention for his swansong turn as foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in the final series of the political satire The Thick of It.

Elsewhere, BBC One’s Last Tango in Halifax performed well with multiple nominations including a Drama Series mention alongside The Hour, Scott and Bailey and Silk.

Additionally, the Sally Wainwright-created programme also receives lead acting nods for veteran stars Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid, and a supporting actress mention for Sarah Lancashire.

The other high-profile actors to receive BAFTA love are Steve Coogan (Welcome to the Places of My Life), Julia Davis (Hunderby), Greg Davies (Cuckoo), Miranda Hart (Miranda), Sheridan Smith (Mrs Biggs), and Ben Whishaw (The Hollow Crown: Richard II).

Elsewhere, ITV duo Coronation Street and Emmerdale lock horns with EastEnders and Shameless in the Soap & Continuing Drama category, while the BBC’s coverage of the Wimbledon men’s final between Andy Murray and Roger Federer is in contention to win the Sport & Live Event prize.

The other notable programmes to be up for BAFTA honours include 7/7: One Day in London, Game of Thrones, Girls, The Graham Norton Show, Grand Designs, The Great British Bake Off, Have I Got News for You, Homeland, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, A League of Their Own, Made in Chelsea, Our War, and Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs.

The 2013 BAFTA Television Awards will be held at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 12 May with chat show host (and Entertainment Performance nominee) Graham Norton back on hosting duties.
