The Girl, Parade’s End and Accused dominate 2013 BAFTA TV award nominations

Last year, Appropriate Adult and Sherlock were the big hitters with the BAFTA TV award nominations but this year’s nominations have come quickly as they were revealed earlier today.

Leading the categories this time around is the BBC and HBO-produced drama The Girl which holds its own with eight nominations including acting nods for Sienna Miller, Toby Jones and Imelda Staunton as well as Best Single Drama. It focuses on the real-life relationship between British film director Alfred Hitchcock (Jones) and actress Tippi Hedren (Miller).

Second in line is the period drama Parade’s End with seven nominations including Best Mini-Series and Best Leading Actress for Rebecca Hall though her co-star Benedict Cumberbatch was snubbed in the Best Leading Actor category.

One programme I will be rooting for is Jimmy McGovern’s Accused which has come third in the nominations list with six mentions including Best Leading Actor for Sean Bean in his role as a transvestite as well as Supporting Actor/Actress nods for Stephen Graham and Olivia Colman.

Colman herself is one of two performers nominated twice this year with her other nomination being in Best Female Comedy Performance for Twenty Twelve. Her co-stars from that show, Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes, are also recognised. The other double-nodded actor is Peter Capaldi who is not only mentioned in Best Supporting Actor for The Hour but is also nominated in Best Male Comedy Performance for his swansong role as foul-mouthed politician Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It.

The Hour and Last Tango in Halifax are also amongst the other dominant dramas competing in various categories. Standout acting nominations also include Ben Whishaw (Richard II), Derek Jacobi (Last Tango), Sheridan Smith (Mrs Biggs), Miranda Hart (Miranda) and Steve Coogan (Welcome to the Places of my Life).

Again, Coronation Street is the soap to root for as the Manchester-based serial goes up against Eastenders, Emmerdale and Shameless in the Best Soap and Continuing Drama category.

Other noteworthy awards include Best Entertainment Performance which is competed by the likes of Alan Carr, Ant and Dec and Graham Norton while popular shows like I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, Made in Chelsea, The Young Apprentice, The Graham Norton Show, Strictly Come Dancing, Homeland and Game of Thrones are in contention in other categories.

Finally there is dominance in the Sport field as the coverage of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games garners nominations for the Opening Ceremony and Super Saturday as well as Channel 4’s coverage of the Paralympic Games and the BBC’s coverage of the Wimbledon men’s final between Andy Murray and Roger Federer.
