After concluding her award-winning portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the hit Netflix series The Crown, Claire Foy has taken on a much darker role for her next screen project.
The Golden Globe-winning British actress has swapped a royal gown for piercings and ruthless tactics as she plays skilled hacker Lisbeth Salander in the upcoming crime thriller The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
The film is the latest cinematic adaptation to come from the renowned Millenium novel series which was originally written by the late Stieg Larsson. The official trailer has now premiered online and can be seen below:
Directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe), the plot sees Lisbeth and a male journalist find themselves caught in a web of spies, cybercriminals and government corruption as they attempt to uncover the truth.
Foy is the third actress to tackle the role of Lisbeth who was previously portrayed on the big-screen by Noomi Rapace in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (all 2009) and Rooney Mara in David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011).
The latter outing earned Mara an Oscar nomination and even won a gong for its editing but it underperformed at the box-office which led to Sony rebooting the film series.
Foy is joined in the cast by Sverrir Gudnason (Wallander, Borg McEnroe), Vicky Krieps (Hanna, Phantom Thread), Stephen Merchant (Extras, Logan), Sylvia Hoeks (Deception, Blade Runner 2049) and Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out, Atlanta).
The Girl in the Spider’s Web will be released in the UK on November 9th.
