An official trailer has been unveiled for the forthcoming BBC mini-series The Reckoning.

The controversial drama focuses on the rise and almighty fall of British DJ and television personality Jimmy Savile with multi-BAFTA-winning star Steve Coogan (I’m Alan Partridge, Philomena, Stan & Ollie) tackling the difficult lead role.

Written by Neil McKay (Appropriate Adult, The Moorside) and directed by Sandra Goldbacher (Me Without You, The Accident), the four-part series traces the life of Savile who, for decades, became one of the UK’s most influential celebrities, but in death has become one of the most reviled figures of modern history following revelations of extensive and horrific abuse.

Despite its controversial subject matter, the drama aims to highlight the importance of confronting the horrors of the past and talking openly about abuse.

The rest of the series’ cast includes BAFTA-winner Gemma Jones (Marvellous, Gentleman Jack), Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley, Time), Mark Lewis Jones (The Crown, Outlander), Robert Emms (Chernobyl, Andor), Michael Jibson (Quiz, Four Lives) and Mark Stanley (Game of Thrones, White House Farm)

The series was originally scheduled for release last year only to be pushed back after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Reckoning will airs its first episode on BBC One on Monday 9 October at 9pm.
