Star Wars: Episode VII officially confirmed for December 2015 release

Having originally been scheduled for a 2015 summer release, the much-anticipated sci-fi sequel Star Wars: Episode VII has now been pushed back to a more traditional date.

The seven installment of the classic space franchise will now be released worldwide on December 18th 2015, a few months later than predicted.

Disney and LucasFilm issued a joint statement about the change of dates.

“We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time need to deliver a sensational picture.”

The news is surprising given all six previous Star Wars were released in the summer. However there are bound to be more audiences eager to see it in the run up to Christmas.

The film will begin shooting in the UK in Spring 2014 with JJ Abrams directing and writing it.
