After performing well with critics and audiences last year, the crime thriller Sicario is set to receive a sequel.

The film starred Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow, Into the Woods) as FBI agent Kate Macer who was enlisted to help a government task force escort a Mexican drug lord across the border only to be confronted by cartel members and face a battle to survive.

Blunt is set to come back for the new installment with Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro (Traffic, Guardians of the Galaxy) and Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Milk) also back as Alejandro and Matt Graver respectively.

News of Sicario’s follow-up was confirmed by Black Label Media co-founders Molly Smith and siblings Trent and Trad Luckinbill earlier today.

Smith said:

“We’re in full development with the studio. I just got a draft of a script from Taylor Sheridan, who wrote Sicario, and we’re really excited.”

The Luckinbills added:

“We can’t reveal the plot, but you’ll see Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin all come back.

You have such a great character with Benicio, who was as dark as he was and still so loved. That character resonates so well with audiences. People want to know what happened to him, so it’s a perfect foray for us to explore.”

However original director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Enemy) is looking unlikely to return as he is currently involved in making the long-awaited sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2.
