After the fallout from yesterday’s Golden Globe Award nominations, the Screen Actors Guild have now offered up their own list of nominees for 2021.
Following his tragic death last August, the late Chadwick Boseman is in contention for Leading Male Actor AND Supporting Male Actor for his respective performances as trumpeter Levee Green in the music-based drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and as squad leader “Stormin'” Norman Earl Holloway in the war drama Da 5 Bloods.
Both films are also up for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award, which is contested by the family drama Minari, the ensemble drama One Night in Miami…and the factual drama The Trial of the Chicago 7.
In the Leading Male Actor category, Boseman competes against British trio Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Father) and Gary Oldman (Mank) as well as Steven Yeun (Minari).
As for Supporting Male Actor, his competition includes two more Brits in Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7) and Oscar favourite Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah). After sneaking a nomination at the Globes yesterday, Jared Leto is again acknowledged for his role in the critically-maligned thriller The Little Things, while the line-up is completed by Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami…).
Elsewhere, Boseman’s Ma Rainey co-star Viola Davis faces fierce competition in the Leading Female Actor field from British duo Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) as well as Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and surprise nominee Amy Adams (Hillbilly Elegy).
Despite Hillbilly Elegy’s woeful critical reception, the film also landed another Supporting Female Actor mention for seasoned star Glenn Close. She faces off against former adversary Olivia Colman (The Father) as well as a trio of newcomers in Bulgarian starlet Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Korean veteran Yun-jung Youn (Minari) and German youngster Helena Zengel (News of the World).
Meanwhile, major contenders Da 5 Bloods and The Trial of the Chicago 7 also find themselves in contention for the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble prize, which is rounded off by the live-action Disney remake Mulan, the western drama News of the World and the DC Comics superhero sequel Wonder Woman 1984.
Once again, there were some notable acting omissions that included Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday), Tom Hanks (News of the World), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), Amanda Seyfried (Mank) and Zendaya (Malcolm and Marie).
Additionally, films like Nomadland, Mank and Judas and the Black Messiah all failed to make the shortlist for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture.
Owing to COVID-19 restrictions, the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place without an official ceremony on 4 April.

Meanwhile, it was a case of déjà vu for Netflix’s The Crown and Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek, as both series repeated their strong performances at the Globes with five SAG nominations apiece.
Once again, The Crown is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series where it is joined by AMC’s Better Call Saul, HBO’s Lovecraft Country, and fellow Netflix dramas Bridgerton and Ozark.
Additionally, the historical drama also garnered a further four noms for its cast with Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson, and newcomer Emma Corrin all in contention for Female Actor (Drama).
The trio are acknowledged for their respective portrayals of Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana, with the rest of the category filled by Ozark duo Julia Garner and Laura Linney.
Furthermore, Josh O’Connor is the sole male nominee representing The Crown in the Male Actor (Drama) field. His competition includes previous category winners Jason Bateman (Ozark), and Sterling K. Brown (This is Us), as well as Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) and current ladies’ favourite Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton).
Elsewhere, multi-Emmy winner Schitt’s Creek is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series alongside Netflix’s Dead to Me, HBO’s The Flight Attendant, Hulu’s The Great and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso.
Once again, all four Schitt’s Creek stars are recognised with father and son duo Eugene and Dan Levy competing against Nicholas Hoult (The Great), Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) and Ramy Youssef (Ramy) in the Male Actor (Comedy) line-up.
Meanwhile, the Female Actor (Comedy) category sees Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy go up against Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant) and Dead to Me pair Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini.
After her controversial snub by the Globes yesterday, British star Michaela Coel earns a Female Actor (Television Movie or Limited Series) nod for her powerful performance in the BBC miniseries I May Destroy You.
Her competition in a powerhouse category includes Oscar winners Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America) and Nicole Kidman (The Undoing) as well as Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) and Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere).
The Male Actor (TV Movie/Limited Series) line-up sees British star Hugh Grant (The Undoing) and Emmy winner Mark Ruffalo (I Know This Much is True) lock horns with Ethan Hawke (The Good Lord Bird) and surprise nominees Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit) and Daveed Diggs (Hamilton).
With Game of Thrones no longer a contender, the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble prize is contested by the likes of The Boys, Cobra Kai and the Star Wars spinoff The Mandalorian.
However, a variety of notable television performances were ignored by the Guild including John Boyega (Small Axe), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), Elle Fanning (The Great), Brendan Gleeson (The Comey Rule), Sarah Paulson (Ratched), Tom Pelphrey (Ozark), Reese Witherspoon (Little Fires Everywhere), and Normal People duo Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones.
Owing to COVID-19 restrictions, the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place without an official ceremony on 4 April.
