SAG nominations: Chadwick Boseman honoured with two posthumous nods

After the fallout from yesterday’s Golden Globes announcement, the Screen Actor’s Guild have offered up their list of nominees for 2021.

Following his tragic death last August, the late Chadwick Boseman is in contention for Best Actor AND Supporting Actor for his performances in the musical drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and the war thriller Da 5 Bloods.

Both films are also up for the prestige Best Ensemble (Film) award which includes factual dramas The Trial of the Chicago 7 and One Night in Miami plus the Korean tale Minari.

In terms of his opponents, Boseman faces off against British trio Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Anthony Hopkins (The Father) and Gary Oldman (Mank) in the Best Actor category.

As for Supporting Actor, his competition includes two more Brits in Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7) and Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah). After sneaking a nomination at the Globes yesterday, Jared Leto is again acknowledged for his role in the critically-maligned thriller The Little Things.

Elsewhere, Boseman’s Ma Rainey co-star Viola Davis faces fierce competition in the Best Actress group from British duo Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) plus Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and surprise nominee Amy Adams (Hillbilly Elegy).

Despite Elegy’s woeful critical reception, the film also landed another mention in Supporting Actress for veteran star Glenn Close. She faces off against former adversary Olivia Colman (The Father) as well as a trio of newcomers in Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Yun-jung Youn (Minari) and Helena Zengel (News of the World).

Once again, there were some notable acting omissions with the biggest being Amanda Seyfried for Mank. Other surprise snubs included Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Tom Hanks (News of the World), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday), Zendaya (Malcolm and Marie), Paul Raci (Sound of Metal) and Ellen Burstyn (Pieces of a Woman).

Additionally, films like Nomadland, Judas and the Black Messiah and Mank all failed to make the shortlist for Best Ensemble (Film).
