Golden Globe (film) nominations: Mank tops big-screen tally with six nods

And we’re off!

Almost fourteen months after their previous nominations day, the Golden Globes have FINALLY unveiled their group of contenders for this pandemic-affected awards season.

On the film front, the Hollywood-based drama Mank leads the way with a solid six nominations including the crucial Best Film (Drama) category. David Fincher and his deceased father Jack are both recognised in Best Director and Screenplay respectively while stars Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried are in contention for the Best Actor (Drama) and Supporting Actress gongs.

Mank contests the Best Film category alongside another factual drama in The Trial of the Chicago 7 which is second on the nods tally with five. Aaron Sorkin is up for both Best Director and Screenplay while Sacha Baron Cohen receives one of two film nominations for his supporting role as activist Abby Hoffman.

Elsewhere, two films helmed by women are in contention for the main category; the vengeance-thriller Promising Young Woman and the indie-drama Nomadland. Directors Emerald Fennell and Chloé Zhao are both shortlisted for Best Director AND Screenplay. The third female filmmaker up for Best Director is Regina King for the drama One Night in Miami.

Nomadland’s Frances McDormand and Young Woman’s Carey Mulligan go head-to-head in a strong Best Actress (Drama) category alongside Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) and Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman).

The late Chadwick Boseman is a strong favourite to win a competitive Best Actor (Drama) line-up that includes British duo Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Father) and Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal).

As well as being nominated for Supporting Actor, Sacha Baron Cohen is also in contention for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) for reprising his iconic role as Kazakhstan reporter Borat Sagdiyev in the mockumentary sequel Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. His competition for that award includes British duo James Corden (The Prom) and Dev Patel (The Personal History of David Copperfield).

Cohen’s Borat co-star Maria Bakalova is deservedly up for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) alongside British duo Rosamund Pike (I Care a Lot) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma) with the mockumentary itself also up for Best Film (Comedy/Musical).

Amongst its rivals for that award include the filmed version of the Broadway hit Hamilton plus the Netflix musical The Prom and the Hulu comedy Palm Springs. The fifth slot was surprisingly taken by the musical drama Sia which also landed an acting nod for Kate Hudson.

British actors Daniel Kaluuya and Olivia Colman will be looking to dominate the supporting contenders with their acclaimed performances in Judas and the Black Messiah and The Father. Despite negative reviews for both their films, Jared Leto and Glenn Close are nominated for their roles in The Little Things and Hillbilly Elegy.

Pixar duo Soul and Onward are both acknowledged in the Best Animated Film category while Best Foreign Language film includes Denmark’s Another Round and the American-produced drama Minari.

As to be expected, there were a bucket load of surprising snubs by the awards committee. Films like Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, One Night in Miami and Judas were all overlooked for Best Film (Drama) while there were acting omissions for Tom Hanks (News of the World), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Sophia Loren (The Life Ahead), Zendaya (Malcolm and Marie), Meryl Streep (The Prom), Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), Ellen Burstyn (Pieces of a Woman) and Yuh-jung Youn (Minari).

The recipient of this year’s Cecile B. DeMille award is multi-awarding actress Jane Fonda who receives the honour for her contributions to film over the past fifty years.
