2021 Golden Globe (film) nominations: Mank tops big-screen tally with six nods

And we’re off!

Almost fourteen months after their previous nominations’ day, the Golden Globes have FINALLY unveiled their group of contenders for this pandemic-affected awards season.

On the cinematic front, the Hollywood-based drama Mank leads the way with a solid six nominations, including a place on the prestigious Best Motion Picture (Drama) shortlist.

The film, which focuses on screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his development of the screenplay for the 1941 film Citizen Kane, also scored a Best Actor (Drama) nod for British veteran Gary Oldman, while co-star Amanda Seyfried is in contention for the Best Supporting Actress gong.

Additionally, filmmaker David Fincher and his deceased father Jack are both recognised for Best Director and Screenplay respectively, while composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are acknowledged in the Best Original Score category.

Meanwhile, the fact-based courtroom drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 also impressed Globe votes by securing five nods, including Best Motion Picture (Drama).

Renowned filmmaker Aaron Sorkin is up for both Best Director and Screenplay, while Sacha Baron Cohen receives one of two film nominations for his supporting role as activist Abby Hoffman.

Elsewhere, two films directed by women are in contention for the main category; the provocative thriller Promising Young Woman and the indie drama Nomadland.

Directors Emerald Fennell and Chloé Zhao are both shortlisted for Best Director AND Screenplay, while actress-turned-filmmaker Regina King for her work on the ensemble drama One Night in Miami….

Nomadland’s Frances McDormand and Promising Young Woman’s Carey Mulligan go head-to-head in a strong Best Actress (Drama) category alongside Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) and Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman).

Meanwhile, the late Chadwick Boseman is strongly tipped to win a stellar Best Actor (Drama) field that includes Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) and Sir Anthony Hopkins, whose film The Father completes the Best Motion Picture (Drama) line-up.

In the comedy fields, the mockumentary sequel Borat Subsequent Moviefilm has the early advantage with three nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical).

As well as being nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Sacha Baron Cohen is also in contention for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) for reprising his iconic role as inept Kazakhstan reporter Borat Sagdiyev.

His competition for that award includes British duo James Corden (The Prom) and Dev Patel (The Personal History of David Copperfield).

Meanwhile, Maria Bakalova is deservedly up for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for her turn as Borat’s teenage daughter Tutar Sagdiyev and is joined by the likes of British duo Rosamund Pike (I Care a Lot) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma).

In terms of the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) field, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm finds itself up against the filmed version of the Broadway hit Hamilton, the Netflix musical The Prom and the sci-fi romcom Palm Springs.

The fifth slot is surprisingly taken by singer-songwriter Sia’s music-based dramedy Music, which also landed an acting nod for Kate Hudson.

Elsewhere, British actors Olivia Colman and Daniel Kaluuya are looking to dominate the supporting contenders with their acclaimed performances in The Father and Judas and the Black Messiah.

Despite negative reviews for both of their films, Glenn Close and Jared Leto are nominated for their respective roles in Hillbilly Elegy and The Little Things.

The other actors to receive Globe nods are Jodie Foster (The Mauritanian), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Bill Murray (On the Rocks), Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami…), Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit), Tahar Rahim (The Mauritanian), Andy Samberg (Palm Springs), and youngster Helena Zengel (News of the World).

Meanwhile, Pixar duo Soul and Onward are both acknowledged in the Best Animated Film category, while the Best Foreign Language Film shortlist includes Denmark’s Another Round, Italy’s The Life Ahead, and the American-produced family drama Minari.

As to be expected, there were a variety of surprising snubs made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association committee.

Films like Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, One Night in Miami and Judas and the Black Messiah were all overlooked for Best Motion Picture (Drama) while there were acting omissions for Ellen Burstyn (Pieces of a Woman) Tom Hanks (News of the World), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Sophia Loren (The Life Ahead), Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), Meryl Streep (The Prom), Zendaya (Malcolm and Marie), and Minari duo Steven Yeun and Yuh-jung Youn.

The recipient of this year’s Cecil B. DeMille award is multi-awarding actress Jane Fonda, who receives the honour for her contributions to film over the past fifty years.

Owing to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s ceremony will be held from both the Rainbow Room in New York, and from the Golden Globes’ usual home at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on 28 February 2021.
