Rebecca Hall portrays tragic news reporter Christine Chubbuck in Christine trailer

Back in 1974, Florida-based news reporter Christine Chubbuck made television history for the wrong reasons by making the shocking decision to commit suicide live on air.

Over forty years since her tragic death, the troubled journalist is now the focus of an upcoming biopic entitled Christine which stars British actress Rebecca Hall (The Town, The BFG) in the leading role.

The film unveiled a dark trailer in the build-up to its American release next month.

Directed by Antonio Campos (Afterschool, Simon Killer), the biopic centres on Christine’s frustrations with her work as a news reporter as well as her difficult relationship with her mother and her romantic feelings towards her on-air colleague.

Hall is joined in the film by Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under, Dexter), Tracy Letts (Homeland, The Big Short), Timothy Simons (Goosebumps, Veep), J. Smith-Cameron (True Blood, Rectify), Maria Dizzia (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Orange is the New Black) and Kim Shaw (Sex and the City Movie, Saving Hope).

There is no available footage of Christine’s death online which is probably for the best given how harrowing the event was.

No UK release date has been confirmed as of yet though it will be shown at the upcoming London Film Festival.
