New Dad’s Army film announced, Toby Jones and Bill Nighy cast as Mainwaring and Wilson

While April Fools Day took place a few weeks ago, this latest piece of film news is surely an overdue joke….

It has been announced today that one of Britain’s greatest sitcoms is about to make a shock return onto the big-screen.

The World War II-based BBC comedy Dad’s Army is set to follow St Trinians in becoming a much-loved classic that is being revived into a new feature film.

Two renowned British actors have already been cast in the coveted roles of Captain George Mainwaring and Sergeant Arthur Wilson (previously portrayed by Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier) respectively.

Toby Jones (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Girl) will play the pompous and authoritative Mainwaring while BAFTA winner Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Pirates of the Caribbean) tackles the part of the charming Wilson.

Original Dad’s Army writer Jimmy Perry is producing the film alongside BAFTA-winner Damien Jones (Adulthood, The Iron Lady).

The story will remain faithful to the beloved series with Captain Mainwaring commanding a makeshift troop of soldiers and defending his hometown against the invading German army.

The rest of the cast have yet to be confirmed with Corporal Jack Jones, Private James Frazer, Private Joe Walker, Private Charles Godfrey and Private Frank Pike amongst the other major characters.

Dad’s Army was a universal success for British television as it aired from 1968 to 1977 and spawned 80 episodes, a long-running stage production and a critically-disappointing film.

As an avid fan of the show, I have one thing to say to the people who thought it a good idea to do this….stupid boys!
