Mike and Sulley meet at college in new trailer for Pixar’s Monsters University

Following the recent 3D re-release of Pixar’s animated hit Monsters Inc (2001), the studio have now unveiled the latest trailer for the film’s prequel Monsters University.

New footage from the film (set several years before Monsters Inc) includes more details of the plot as our one-eyed hero Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) becomes college roommates with his future pal James P. ‘Sulley’ Sullivan (John Goodman) only for the pair to take an initial dislike to each other. However as all know with the popular 2001 classic, they will eventually overcome their differences and form a strong friendship.

Oscar-winning British actress Dame Helen Mirren (The Queen, Hitchcock) is the big-name addition to the film as she voices the pair’s dean Ms Hardscrabble. On getting the role, Mirren said:

“As a great fan of all things Pixar, I was honoured and exhilarated to be asked to appear in Monsters University. What a liberation! As an actor, you have two important tools to your trade: your voice and your body. It has been easy over the years to find good roles for my voice, but it has not been so easy to squash my many legs and my wings into the various costumes I have been forced to uncomfortably wear, disguising my true form. Finally I can make good use of both voice and body in a role that seems tailor-made for me—one could say monster-made. At last, the audience can experience the real Helen Mirren. Thank you Disney/Pixar and director Dan Scanlon.”

There is some further nostalgia thrown in for our two heroes in the prequel’s plot as the original film’s villain Randall (voiced by Boardwalk Empire‘s Steve Buscemi) also makes an appearance.

Monsters University will be released in the UK on July 12th.
