Matt Damon helps protect the Great Wall of China in The Great Wall trailer

After returning to his iconic role as kick-ass spy Jason Bourne in the summer blockbuster Jason Bourne, Matt Damon is now trading guns for a bow and arrow in his next film.

The Oscar-winning star of The Departed (2006) and The Martian (2015) leads the upcoming historical epic The Great Wall which is helmed by visionary director Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers).

Following the release of a teaser several weeks ago, the film’s official trailer has now landed.

Set during the Northern Song Dynasty (959-1126), the story sees Damon play a foreign warrior who joins forces with the Chinese in order to help protect the iconic Great Wall from enemy forces.

Damon is joined by Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Narcos), Jing Tian (Special ID, Kong: Skull Island), Lu Han (The Witness, Time Raiders), Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs, House of Flying Daggers) and Willem Dafoe (Platoon, John Wick).

With a reported budget of $135 million, the film is the most expensive to be shot in China with 90% of the cast being from there.

The Great Wall will be released in the UK on February 24th 2017.
