Knight Matt Damon fights for victimised wife Jodie Comer in official trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel

As one of Britain’s most celebrated filmmakers, Sir Ridley Scott has been involved in a high number of versatile projects over a number of decades.

The Oscar-nominated director of Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000) and The Martian (2015) is still continuing to work well into his 80s and looks to have another major hit on his hands in the form of The Last Duel.

Based on the novel by Eric Jager, the historical drama features some of the most celebrated actors in the industry including two Oscar-winners and a very talented Emmy winner braced for bigger things.

The film’s official trailer has landed and sees Liverpudlian star Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, Free Guy) take centre stage as a woman who refused to stay silent.

Set in 14th-century France, the film centres on knight Jean de Carrouges as he discovers that his wife Marguerite (Jodie) has been raped by his squire Jacques Le Gris. In order to settle the dispute, King Charles VI orders the two men to fight to the death via a duel that would end one of France’s longest traditions.

Having previously worked with Scott on Green Zone (2010) and The Martian, Matt Damon (Bourne series, The Departed) leads the film as Jean with Jodie co-starring as his victimised wife Marguerite.

Meanwhile, the prolific Adam Driver (Star Wars trilogy, Marriage Story) tackles the role of the suspected Le Gris while Ben Affleck (Argo, Justice League) is strangely cast as the King.

Coincidentally, Affleck and Damon have co-written the script over 20 years after their Oscar-winning collaboration on Good Will Hunting (1997). They share screenwriting credits with Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said, Can You Ever Forgive Me?).

The rest of the cast includes Harriet Walter (Law & Order: UK, Killing Eve), Nathaniel Parker (The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Ophelia), Sam Hazeldine (Peaky Blinders, Elizabeth is Missing) and Michael McElhatton (Game of Thrones, Chernobyl).

The Last Duel will be released in UK cinemas on 15 October.
