Keanu Reeves’ Neo tries to piece together his life in official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections

Over twenty years have passed since Keanu Reeves became ‘The One’ in the renowned sci-fi blockbuster The Matrix (1999).

Deemed a cultural phenomenon, the film was later followed by two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded (2002) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003); both of which were deemed critical disappointments.

Almost two decades later, the hit franchise is finally returning for a new outing that sees Reeves reprise his iconic role as former computer programmer-turned-kick-ass cyber-criminal Neo.

After a long wait, fans will be delighted to see that The Matrix Resurrections has finally unveiled its official trailer.

Helmed by The Matrix director Lana Wachowski, the plot sees Neo living a seemingly-boring life years after the War of the Machines. However, he soon finds himself piecing together memories from his past amid the threat of a new enemy.

Despite her character’s death in Matrix Revolutions, Carrie-Anne Moss is also back as popular heroine Trinity.

The rest of the starry support cast includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Watchmen), Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones, Iron Fist), Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter, Hamilton), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Gone Girl), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico, The White Tiger), Christina Ricci (The Addams Family, Speed Racer) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Angels Have Fallen, Gotham).

However, there appears to be no return at all for original Matrix stars Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus) or Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith).

The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled for release in the UK on 22 December.
