The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has spoken…
This afternoon saw the controversial organisation unveil their Golden Globe Award nominations across film and television, with the big-screen contenders dominated by The Banshees of Inisherin with a hefty eight nods.
The Irish dark comedy, which focuses on the abrupt fall-out between two old friends, is shortlisted for the coveted Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) accolade, while filmmaker Martin McDonagh is in contention twice for his directing and writing.
Additionally, leading man Colin Farrell is up for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) while co-stars Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon are all nominated for their supporting turns.
Meanwhile, the multiverse-based dramedy Everything Everywhere All at Once performed well with six nominations including Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) as well as three nods for its cast.
Seasoned Malaysian star Michelle Yeoh contests the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) line-up, while comeback king Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis are both acknowledged in the supporting categories.
Both The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once compete in a versatile main category alongside the period epic Babylon, the dark comedy Triangle of Sadness and the mystery caper sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
From those films, Babylon scored an additional three noms for its ensemble, with Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and newcomer Diego Calva all recognised for their performances.
Meanwhile, Daniel Craig (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), Ralph Fiennes (The Menu), Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris) and Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) are among the British stars in contention for the comedy/musical gongs.
On the drama front, Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans is in contention for five Globes including the coveted Best Motion Picture (Drama) in which it competes against the music-based biopic Elvis, the drama TÁR and blockbuster sequels Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick.
Once again, Spielberg is up for Best Director and locks horns with James Cameron (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Baz Luhrmann (Elvis), while The Fabelmans star Michelle Williams is shortlisted for Best Actress (Drama) alongside Olivia Colman (Empire of Light), Ana de Armas (Blonde) and early Oscar frontrunner Cate Blanchett (Tár).
Elsewhere, rising star Austin Butler is nominated for his portrayal of legendary singer Elvis Presley in Elvis and faces stern competition from the likes of Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Hugh Jackman (The Son) and British veteran Bill Nighy (Living).
The remaining actors to land receive Globe nods are Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Viola Davis (The Woman King), Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness), Adam Driver (White Noise), Carey Mulligan (She Said), Jeremy Pope (The Inspection), and Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse).
The Best Animated Film line-up sees Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Pinocchio face-off against the likes of Pixar’s Turning Red and the Puss in Boots sequel The Last Wish, while the Indian action epic RRR earns two nods, including Best Original Song for the show-stopping banger “Naatu Naatu”.
Additionally, RRR also competes in a stellar Best Motion Picture (Non-English Language) category alongside Germany’s All Quiet on the Western Front and South Korea’s Decision to Leave.
As to be expected, there are a number of notable omissions, with Women Talking managing just two nominations and failing to garner a nod for cast members Jessie Buckley, Claire Foy or Ben Whishaw.
The other key acting contenders to miss out include Hong Chau (The Whale), Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick), Paul Dano (The Fabelmans), Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Tom Hanks (A Man Called Otto) and Janelle Monáe (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery).
The 80th Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on 11 January, with hosting duties being taken by comedian Jerrod Carmichael.
