2019 Emmy Award nominations: Final series of Game of Thrones receives record haul

The nominations for the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled.

Starting in drama, the critically-diverse final series of HBO’s Game of Thrones leads the pack with a record-breaking 32 nominations which include the coveted Outstanding Drama Series gong. Overall, the fantasy epic finishes with an astonishing 161 nods from across eight exhilarating series.

Close to a dozen of the cast received nods as well, with Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington acknowledged in the lead categories for their iconic portrayals of Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow.

Former Emmy winner Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) and returning nominees Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) are also acknowledged in the supporting line-ups alongside first-time nominees Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), and Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy).

Thrones contests a strong Drama Series line-up that includes British programmes Bodyguard and Killing Eve, and hit US shows Better Call Saul, Ozark, Pose, Succession and This is Us.

After being overlooked by the Emmys last year, Liverpudlian actress Jodie Comer is nominated in a powerhouse Lead Actress category for her acclaimed performance as psychopathic assassin Villanelle in Killing Eve. The nod comes just two months after she won a television BAFTA for her career-making role.

Her competition in the Lead Actress category includes co-star and returning nominee Sandra Oh as MI6 agent Eve Polastri as well as the likes of Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), Laura Linney (Ozark) and Mandy Moore (This is Us).

Elsewhere, Billy Porter will be looking to become the first gay man to win the Lead Actor gong for his role in Pose and faces stern competition from the likes of Jason Bateman (Ozark), Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul).

The rest of the notable acting nominees include Robin Wright (House of Cards), Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve), and Better Call Saul duo Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito.

Meanwhile, BBC’s Fleabag and Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are among the high-profile contenders in the comedy categories.

Fleabag, which centres on a single London woman and her relationships with a ‘hot priest’ and her troublesome family, is up for Outstanding Comedy Series alongside the likes of Mrs. Maisel, and the final series of HBO’s Veep.

Creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is in contention for two awards for writing, and for her star-making role in a formidable Lead Actress line-up. However, she faces stiff competition from a number of big guns including six-time category winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus for her swansong turn as vainglorious presidential candidate Selina Meyer in Veep, and last year’s victor Rachel Brosnahan for her reprised role as aspiring comedian Midge Maisel in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Additionally, Fleabag also received two further acting nominations for Olivia Colman and Sian Clifford who go head-to-head in the Supporting Actress field. Disappointingly, there is no Supporting Actor mention for Andrew Scott and his memorable role as the ‘Hot Priest’.

Having garnered a lucrative twenty nominations across the board, Mrs Maisel scored an additional three acting mentions for last year’s Supporting Actress winner Alex Borstein as well as noms for co-stars Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle.

Meanwhile, Bill Hader is looking to bag a second straight Emmy win in Lead Actor for his returning role as hitman Barry in the HBO comedy of the same name while co-stars Henry Winkler, Anthony Carrigan and Stephen Root lock horns in Supporting Actor.

After going under the radar for years, Pop TV’s hit sitcom Schitt’s Creek finally receives its first set of major Emmy mentions that include Outstanding Comedy Series as well as leading nods for stars Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara.

The rest of the notable acting contenders include Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), Don Cheadle (Black Monday), Ted Danson (The Good Place), Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method), Anna Chlumsky (Veep), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Alan Arkin (The Kominsky Method) and Tony Hale (Veep).

Finally, the Sky Original and HBO miniseries Chernobyl has racked up a formidable nineteen nominations in the limited series categories.

The factual drama, which explores the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, is heavily tipped to win Outstanding Limited Series where it faces stern opposition from Escape at Dannemora, Fosse/Verdon, Sharp Objects and When They See Us.

Additionally, Jared Harris is shortlisted in Lead Actor for his portrayal of Valery Legasov while co-stars Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson are nominated in the supporting fields.

Netflix’s When They See Us also produced a strong showing in terms of noms with sixteen including Outstanding Limited Series. Based on the true story of the Central Park Five, the factual miniseries also bagged eight acting nods for its cast including Jharrel Jerome in Lead Actor, and Aunjanue Ellis and Niecy Nash in Lead Actress.

Meanwhile, the Outstanding Television Movie category is contested by various single dramas including the Black Mirror outing Bandersnatch, the political film Brexit, and the HBO western Deadwood: The Movie.

In the acting fields, Hollywood stars Amy Adams (Sharp Objects) and Michelle Williams (Fosse/Verdon) lock horns in the Lead Actress category alongside Patricia Arquette (Escape at Dannemora) who is also acknowledged in Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Dee Dee Blanchard in The Act.

Elsewhere, British co-stars Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw are both nominated for their performances in the BBC mini-series A Very English Scandal with the former competing in a versatile Lead Actor line-up that already includes Harris and Jerome.

The rest of the notable acting nominees include Joey King (The Act), Mahershala Ali (True Detective), Benicio del Toro (Escape at Dannemora), Sam Rockwell (Fosse/Verdon), Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects), Vera Farmiga (When They See Us), Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora), and Michael K.
