With 2013 set to be another bumper year for blockbusters, the first proper teaser trailer for JJ Abram’s sci-fi action sequel Star Trek Into Darkness has been unveiled. And judging from early impressions, it looks like it’s going boldly where no Star Trek film/episode has gone before.

The minute long preview sees the Star Trek crew, led by James Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), battling to save Earth from destruction as a mysterious villain (Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch) unleashes havoc.

The sequel’s official synopsis reads:

“When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organisation has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew”

Zoe Saldaña (Avatar, Columbiana), Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, Dredd) and Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz, Paul) reprise their roles from the original 2009 blockbuster with British actress Alice Eve (The Raven, Men in Black III) being the other big name addition to the cast.

Trekkies can look forward to Star Trek Into Darkness when it is released worldwide on May 17th 2013.
