Downton Abbey’s Lily James takes on lead role in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella

She is best known to some audiences as the rebellious Lady Rose MacClare in ITV’s hit series Downton Abbey but young British actress Lily James looks set to become a leading cinematic star after being cast in Disney’s live-action version of Cinderella.

The LA Times was one of several media outlets to confirm the casting which sees James portray the role of fairytale heroine Cinderella in the new film.

The Wrath of the Titans and Fast Girls star was one of three actresses competing for the part along with Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows) and Margot Robbie (Neighbours) after original choice Emma Watson (Harry Potter Series) dropped out.

Renowned actor/director Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Thor) is helming the upcoming film with Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett (Lord of the Rings, The Aviator) already cast as Cinderella’s wicked stepmother.

It will be the second time the fairytale has been adapted by Disney following the classic animated film from 1950.

In the meantime, filming will begin on the new production next year.
