With the Oscar nominations just two weeks away, BAFTA have announced their contenders for this year, with one particular film dominating again.
Following its record-breaking haul at the Golden Globes, the romantic musical La La Land leads the way with a mighty eleven nods, including the coveted Best Film prize.
Once again, stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are nominated for Leading Actor and Leading Actress respectively, while filmmaker Damien Chazelle receives double noms for his directing and writing.
The film, which centres on a bittersweet romance between a pianist and an aspiring actress, also scored several technical nods including Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Music.
It was a terrific day for Amy Adams, as two of her films picked up an impressive nine mentions apiece.
The sci-fi drama Arrival earns a place on the Best Film shortlist, while Adams herself competes in the Leading Actress category for her role as linguist Louise Banks.
Additionally, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is in contention for the Best Director prize and is up against Tom Ford for his work on Adams’ other film Nocturnal Animals.
Though it missed out on a Best Film nod, the psychological thriller did score some key nods, including a shock Leading Actor mention for star Jake Gyllenhaal. Once again, British performer Aaron Taylor-Johnson is acknowledged in the Supporting Actor category after pulling off a stunning win at the Golden Globes last Sunday.
Meanwhile, Oscar contenders Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight are in contention for the Best Film accolade, with the fifth slot taken up by Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or-winning drama I, Daniel Blake.
Loach himself earns his first Best Director nomination since 1971 for his work on the film, while newcomer Hayley Squires receives a surprise Best Supporting Actress mention.
The drama, which centres on a sickly carpenter and his battle against the UK benefits system, is also shortlisted for the Outstanding British Film prize where it competes against the likes of American Honey and the Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
In the acting fields, Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) will be looking to cement his position as an Oscar frontrunner after scoring a Best Leading Actor nod alongside Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) and Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic).
Remarkably, Denzel Washington’s long wait for a first BAFTA nom continues after he was shockingly overlooked for his performance in Fences.
Meanwhile, British star Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train) competes against Natalie Portman (Jackie) and the great Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) in the Best Leading Actress category, while fellow Brit Naomie Harris (Moonlight) faces off against Hollywood big-guns Viola Davis (Fences), Nicole Kidman (Lion) and Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) in the Supporting Actress field.
A stellar Best Supporting Actor line-up sees British trio Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Dev Patel (Lion) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson battle it out with Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and veteran Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water).
In other categories, Disney trio Finding Dory, Moana and Zootopia are nominated for Best Animated Film, while Son of Saul and Toni Erdmann lock horns in the Best Film Not in the English Language group.
Meanwhile, the Best Documentary line-up is also hotly contested by the likes of The Beatles: Eight Days a Week, Notes on Blindness, and the race-relations feature 13th.
As previously announced, British newcomer Tom Holland is among the rising talent seeking to win the EE Rising Star award, with Ruth Negga and Anya Taylor-Joy among his fellow nominees.
However, BAFTA incurred the wrath of various film fans, with Barry Jenkins shockingly absent from the Best Director line-up for his work on Moonlight.
Additionally, films like Martin Scorsese’s Silence and Clint Eastwood’s Sully were completely overlooked, as were performances from Dave Johns (I, Daniel Blake), Ruth Negga (Loving), Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals), and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures).
The 70th EE BAFTAs will be held at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 12 February, with Stephen Fry hosting again for the twelfth time.
